This is one of my absolute favorite scenes in the game. Before this moment, after so many hardships Ellie's spirit had been a little broken, and we are led to be worried about her as much as Joel must be. Until she suddenly disappears up a ladder, something seems to have caught her attention, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one going up that ladder ready to go guns blazing.

However, it's none of the sort. She has spotted a herd of giraffes! As she reaches out to one of them and whispers “hey there,” with a child-like awe, we are briefly reminded again that Ellie is a child. In this world of kill or be killed, this is the most precious moment for me in the whole story.
