Description
PLEASE FULLVIEW!!or you can't see all the little details.
Well, I just finished this with only two hours until the deadline. This is my entry for Saimain's contest [link] and it is drawing of her adorable character Sali. Here is her descpirtion of him:
Shaftan (a winged elf race). He has turquoise eyes, long white hair that curls at the edges, fluffy white wings, and very pale skin. He generally wears loose and airy clothes (like gauze, I suppose?), or sometimes nothing at all. Heβs small for his age (he can be drawn anywhere from 5 to 14 years old), and his long ears bend downward at the tips.
Orphaned as a baby, Sali remembers little of his past, and makes the most of every day, happy to please. He was watched over from birth by his uncle, Patch, until Patch's untimely death at the hands of Julian. Taken under Kris' wing, he flourishes under the attentive care and safety that Kris provides, and loves to follow Kris about on his duties and often imitate him. A vibrant and bouncy little Shaftan, he collects shells, jewelry, and other shiny objects like a packrat, and stores his treasures in a small cave near the sea.
Everything was done in prismacolor pencil. Everything! Which took quit a long time to finish, but this was so much fun to do. I am happy with how the drawing turned out and hope you like it to Saimain.
Please leave comments and tell me what you think
Also, please tell me if the picture is dark or blurry or anything because the computer I'm on has a dark screen. I used one Wolfcat's stock as reference for Sali's position, altered a little of course [link]
Please don't not take or alter this picture. The character is (c)Saimain and the drawing is mine.

Very good work!
You may want to put a little more practivce into facial structure, but even then, the face of your character here is very well done(the eyes, nose, and mouth seem a little off).
The interplay between the cave walls, the rolling sea, and the cloudy sky is phenomenal! You showed a great level of detail in all three.
The subjects proportions, skin tone, and hair are very well done too ( the right foot seems to have webbed toes). You show a great deal of control in forming each.
The three dimensional sense and lighting on the baubels in the lower right corner are positively intriguing.
In this one piece, you have shown tremendous skill in living subjexts, inatimate ones, backgrounds, textures, environments, and blending therein together. That is a very impressive feat. You should be very proud.
I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Thank you so much for your detailed and well thought out comment!
One thing I want to work on is exactlly what you pointed out, facial expressions. There is only one way to improve, practice, and that is precisely what I am trying to do .
I am very pleased to hear you like the cave walls, sea, and sky because I used different techniques in this drawing than I have ever used in of my other art pieces. The cave walls and sky were very enjoyable to shade, but the water was not quit as much fun. The sea was the portion of my drawing that took the longest time for the amount of space it fills. While coloring it, I had to be cautious of what I was doing because there are shimmers of white here and there. The white is the actual paper I drew on, not anything put on top of the colored pencil.
The lighting was also neat to experiment with to see how I could make cetain objects standout, even if they were not the center of attention, like the baubles you noticed.
Again, thank you for your artisic opinion!! It's wonderful to know that someone took so much from my drawing.

*Jaw hits floor and shatters* OMG!!!!!! This is absolutely breath-taking. The detail in phenomenal. The
water and the sky look amazing, but the rocks and sand are unbelievable. The rocks look so real and
the sand even has tiny grains. I can see them. I also love the shine of all the jewelry and the detail on
them as well. The chains of each knecklace have individual links and the red knecklace on the far left
even has tiny hinges like it's a locket. I also love the fact that even the sand-dollar has it's own individual
shadow. The shells look fantastic as well. I also love Sali's pose, his gorgeous wings and flowing hair,
and those beautiful green eyes. The coloring of this is just beyond my comprehension. You have truly
outdone yourself on this. If you do not win I will not understand why because yours if by far one of the
best entries. I bow to you oh great one. I LOVE THIS!!!!

wow, pencil....the detail is astonishing....especially for the shells and the beads
it reminds me of shirley barber art ( she drawns fairies and such in really tremendous detail and with little jewels at the edges) it must have been drawn on a quite large sheet of paper
I really want some of these pencils.....

Thank you for your comment!I'm so happy you like all of the detail. Prismacolor pencils are great, but they are kinda expensive. Totally worth it though!!
I drew this drawing on 11x14in, so I don't think that's too big.
Shirley Barber? Hm, I don't know who that is, but I'm going to find out now.

You're skill in Prismas is by far one of the best I've ever seen. Beautiful color choices and blending. My screen is an extremely bright one, but even here, the drawing is a bit dark, but not too blurry.
This is a gorgeous design for the contest, very original pose, and you are VERY talented at drawing/coloring backgrounds. The spiffy clouds and the bright sky caught my eye right away. I also adore the realistic cracks, shadings, and shadows in the rock cave.
My favorite would definitely be the skin tones, so soft and delicate, and I honestly thought those jewels would pop out, they are so shiny, so well rendered. The ocean waves...I'm absolutely astounded at how you captured it. You are the most underrated artist ever, this is BEYOND amazing work.
You MUST win this contest, you deserve it, and I will forcibly choke someone if you don't, this piece if incredible. Good luck to you!

OMG! You made me blush while reading your entire comment.
I always love to read your comments because you always make a point to mention the parts you like. I did try really hard on this one, since it was for the great Saimain's contest. I have worked on this for about a month on and off, so I'm unsure of the hours I put into it, but I know it was a lot.
So glad you like the background. Normally I don't do backgrounds, but I am trying to get out of that nasty little habbit of mine. Backgrounds can take so long, yet they can add even more to your drawing than you ever think is possible. I was unsure if I could pull of the shine on the jewelry or the texture of the background, but I just went for it. This was definately a piece I learned a lot from.
Thank you for your strong support in the contest. It would be amazing to have my art in a book

I had to smile at your enthusiasm. I'm really glad that my comments make you happy. I try to make it a point to actually COMMENT, because I often click art only to see " omfg uR sooo g00d@ aRtz!!" and that really disappoints me.
You certainly did put a lot of effort and time into this, a whole month! But it really paid off, I could clearly see the improvement in this piece. And the background turned out extremely well! That's one of the best captured and portrayed backgrounds I've ever seen, so detailed and smooth to the point of surrealism. The jewelry is just
I can see that you will continue improving a lot, and I'm cheering for you to win this contest! No one else deserves that honor. And on a last note...I thank YOU for creating such marvelous artwork that I may enjoy!

@_@ I can only imagine how long it took....
I swear I'd get SO MAD at the pic if I had to work on it that long. I'dquit right in the middle of it, and then if I was lucky I'd pick up on it the next day, otherwise it'd never ever ever get done. And then somebody'd be sad. ;_;
Yes, that had nothing to do with anything. YEY~!

Gah, so many little details...this is gorgeous! It is a little dark and blurry, but not bad...I wish I knew what the original looked like. Taking a photo loses a lot of the original feel and color to a piece. But I really love this! All the work you put into it certainly shows! The water is astounding, and all the rocks and seashells and little jewels...wow. And all in prismacolor pencil... *dies* You certainly have some talent! Sali looks so pleased...heck, I'd be proud of that shell, too, if I'd found it. ^__^
Thank you so much for participating in the contest. I wish you the very best of luck! Do you have access at all to a scanner? If this is chosen for the artbook, I'll need a good quality 300dpi scan of it.

I will find a scanner if it kills me! My dad has access to one in his office. Mine at home only scans 8.5x11 and this is a little bigger.
I wanted to take a better photo of it to because it really did kill a lot of the detail. You can't see it in this photo, but there are even grains in the sand. Gah, I couldn't help it though. It was truely the most enjoyable piece of art I have done in a long time. But I will beg my dad to take it to his office and scan if for me.
I am so pleased that you like it!!!!!!!!!
