Description

The nautilus is unique for being the sole living cephalopod that has its own external shell; other cephalopods have either an entirely internal shell or have ditched it entirely. During the Mesozoic, there were thousands of species of ammonites, another cephalopod that also bore external shells in a staggeringly wide array of shapes and sizes, but they didn't make it past the KT Extinction.
As far as mermaids go, the nautilus is a tricky sea creature to make a mermaid out of, and I'll be frank, I've seen a LOT of bizarre takes on the idea. I feel like I took a pretty basic route, for what it's worth.
