Description
You don't have to go to school today, my mommy told me.Yes! I thought
That spelling test would have gone horribly.
I was 9 and it was already spring with tulips in full bloom,
Let's go fly kites, she said,
And we did all afternoon.
Our kites swam through the sky like rainbow guppies in the sea,
But sometimes a gust of wind would twist them away,
And they would spiral into trees.
“Wait for me here in the hospital. It won't take that long.”
So I swung my legs in the seat,
without knowing anything was wrong.
It was still spring when my mommy showed me a neat trick
She ripped the golden strands from her head
They fell, and that was it.
“My dear, throw the confetti to the air,
Grab out a handful
Because it is only just hair.”
“Let the wind take you wherever it may be.”
She always said it with a smile
Because she was already in the breeze.
The tulips had withered away,
Bright bulbs of light,
That only bloomed for a few days.
Their petals always fall,
Our kites would eventually hurl themselves from the sky,
My spelling was horrible after all,
And I'll never forget that spring when Mommy died.
