The main greenhouse gases are water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. It turns out that gases whose molecules have 3 or more atoms can absorb and emit infrared light. In contrast, the main components of the atmosphere, nitrogen, oxygen and argon cannot, as they have less than 3 atoms per molecule.
