Description
I used to hang out in forums such as Wrong Planet and lurked in Aspies for Freedom and what drove me away was this sort of "I have a problem and I'm in denial" attitude where there was lots of NT bashing and trying to compensate by relying on stereotypes such as "Aspies are great at math and science", "Aspies often have genius level IQs" and "Aspies don't play mind games".What bugs me about these stereotypes is that they are still stereotypes, so they set up expectations that have the potential to make people feel bad if they don't meet that criteria. In that first statement up there, if you replace the word "Aspies" with "Asians", they're both stereotypes, yet somehow the first one is acceptable at least partially because the media likes to latch on to the Rain Man types who can draw beautiful landscapes with their eyes closed but never figured out how to tie their shoes.
Aspergers and autism (formerly) being classified as separate things didn't stop the media from mixing up the two, so that didn't help.

Yeah, i know.
"Aspies are great at math and science"
I think math is very boring, and I suck at it (during my childhood I was average at math)
I'm rather good in science, but just because I find it fascinating.
"Aspies often have genius level IQs"
My IQ, based on online tests is about 108. But online tests are often BS, so I don't know how it is.
"Aspies don't play mind games"
I didn't and don't because i think is stupid, and I fell bad to do this.
"So they set up expectations that have the potential to make people feel bad if they don't meet that criteria"

Also I am awful at number crunching and math in general was always somewhat difficult for me.

That's about my IQ and I took a legitimate test. It's a bitch, yeah?
The mind games thing is a stereotype based on how Aspies are extremely logical, blunt, and have no interest in manipulating people. It's bullshit because that's a personality trait you can learn even if you do have AS. Not that you're disputing this - just wanted to clarify.
When I hear about someone with AS who has a genius IQ or they're becoming engineers, it sort of intimidates me. Moreso when they sort of flaunt their IQ. :/
