Milwaukee Zoo - 07/24/2004One of the species of animals I love most in the world, are the bats. In this instance, we have a pair of vampire bats, but pretty much all bats have their appeal and attraction to them. I'd love to have a bat as a pet, but I'm not sure if that's actually allowed or not. But I can still enjoy them from afar.

*laughs* I think that if hanging upside down bothered them, they wouldn't do it. But yeah, I'm not sure of the physiological differences that allows them to do that. Looks like fun, though.
No, no flashlight. The bat exhibits are illuminated in a blue light, so it's not completely dark. In such situations, during the auto-focus stage, my camera puts out a red light that it uses to focus with. I then used the flash in order to illuminate the entire shot. I do need to take more bat photos, though. It really is difficult to get good shot under those conditions, because the auto-focus is not always 100% accurate in low-light situations, and you never quite know how the flash will reflect on the glass, often ruining an otherwise great picture.

Oh, vampire bats~ It's such a great shot, I have no idea how you got that close. Did they let you in the cage with them?
Bat's are amazing, it's sad how many people are scared of them. I always thought vampire bats had such cute faces. And yeah, having one as a pet would be nice, but it'd be sad because it wouldn't be able to fly around and be free. Kinda makes you want to work at a zoo or study them in the wild or something. Wish I could do that.

But no, the enclosure these bats were in wasn't that large, so they were fairly close. I agree completely about keeping such animals as pets. As much as I'd love to have one (or two, or three...

I'd like to think I was an animal photographer, though I do most of my photography at zoos as a hobby. Unfortunately, my actual job only affords me 2 weeks vacation time a year, and with all the things I do with friends and family, I don't have much time to actually spend it in the wilds and get more natural shots. But when it comes to photography, animals are indeed my favorite subject. I really wish I could spend more time at it.
As for pets, yes, I really need to look into the possibility of getting a bat as a pet. I simply love the species and from what I've learned about them, the larger fruit bats can make suitable pets. Not that I wouldn't mind having a vampire bat as a pet either.

*smiles* What fun is having a bat, if it can't bite people? But here in the USA, each state has it's own laws in that regard. Having just moved to a new state this past year, I don't know what such laws about that would be here. I'll have to look into it.
