I finally finished my character. I'll tell a little about her

Heilög lives in one of the settlements of the northern archipelago. Their community is not very rich. The land in the North is not fertile and they can not engage in agriculture. Warriors spend most of their time hunting sea monsters or attacking other settlements.

Heilög  refers to the number of rejected, people who are treated with caution. They are called "Seekers of beyond" or simply Stone-eyed.

She went by the way of the Stone, having received in exchange his strength.

To become a stone-eyed, one must go through a torturous ritual.  The applicant has one eye cut out, and a 'Calling Stone' is put in its place . Not many can survive the rite.

It is not uncommon for a stone to cause ugliness or death.

If, after all, a person has passed the test, then hard training and learning the secrets of the Stone are waiting for him. The calling stone allows you to see what the living do not see, to use spiritual forces that are not subject to the rest. Stone-eyed people get the ability to see the things of ancient civilization and find them, approaching the solution of its disappearance.

Special thanks  for help in writing the character's name

Wondering if you used the old norse word for holy intentionally or accidentally

You might want to know that Heilagr is a male specific word. The modern female equivalent would be Heilög, but in old norse it would have been Helg... (And now you know where the modern scandinavian name Helga comes from ) you need to watch out for that in old norse and some other scandinavian languages.

There are male and female variations on many words, Icelandic is SUPER close to old norse, closer than all other well known scandinvaian languages (there is some obscure sub-language of norwegian in a specific part of norway that is as close or closer tho, or so I hear but norwegian itself isn't, I mean it's close, it's definitely close, faroese is even closer than that, almost as close as icelandic, but Icelandic is in a nutshell old norse with a few added letters that are intended to clarify pronouncation, old norse for holy(male) is heilagr, icelandic for the same is heilagur, old norse didn't account for pronouncation in it's typography but Icelandic does, that's essentially the only major difference.)

So an example for he/she is daring

Hann er djarfur (he is daring)
Hún er djörf (she is daring)

See?

Hann er heilagur (he is holy) (this is what you used, without the 'u' in it but it's the same word, like I said the u just clarifies pronouncation, because we don't pronunce the ending as "grrr" hehe we were pretty barbaric, but not THAT barbaric)
Hún er heilög (she is holy)

But I'm pretty sure tha the word heilög is specific to icelandic to make a female word for holy that sounds more similar to the male one than the older one which is helg, we still use the word helg in Icelandic too, but normally in context of inanimate thing. The reason I doubt heilög existed in old norse is because heilg would just be to osimilar to helg. Incidentally however there is a male version of helg which is helgur (or helgr)

Language lesson over my point was that the name you're using for the character would never be used for a female in old norse, because it's specifically a male word.

This sounds fair. But a lot of sites tell me about what it's all about female name)

Those sites don't know what they're talking about, but since you had to bring the internet into this

Wikipedia is on my side  en.wiktionary.org/wiki/heilagr (seems like heilög was a thing in old norse tho )

Those other sites lied to you trust me I know what I'm talking about, my own language is  so strongly derived from old norse it's almost identical (it's basically a revision), I can literally read and understand old norse text, they're that close.

Okay, i see) I do not argue with you, I believe you.
But  what about it  en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helga Helga (derived from Old Norse  heilagr - "holy", "blessed")  ?

In case this form is not applicable I can use this Heilǫg.

Cestarian In reply to Prywinko [2017-08-19 21:12:39 +0000 UTC]

This is probably inaccurate information. And don't worry, this is not an argument, it's a conversation

But there is another name, a male version of helga, helgi. It may be that helgi is derived from heilagr originally; and helga is a female version of the name helgi therefore indirectly derived from heilagr. That is a possible scenario, either way no matter whether that information is accurate or not, the facts I said about the word heilagr remain, it is only applicable as a name if it is male if you want to be linguistically correct.

I see you did do some research for the name so I sort of assume that you do in which case yes, Heilög would be more appropriate. (I've never seen this letter ǫ it looks cool! seems like in icelandic the letter has been replaced by ö)

Either way, you don't "have to" be linguistically correct, a fictional character, you can name her anything you want. But if you want to be linguistically correct then you need to change the name to a feminine noun/adjective. Like Heilög or Heilǫg or Helg or even just plain old Helga I just thought you wanted to know this stuff is all you do what you want with this information
