The tall banners in Minecraft for decoration, can be placed in either on the ground, or a wall. They also can be customized with different colors and patterns
The banners can also be used for applying patterns on shields, or worn on the back (by using NBT editors)
There also an unique variant known as "Ominous Banner", which can be seen carried by the raid Illager captains in their outposts. Although killing the captain will cause a "Bad Omen" status, starting an illager raid upon entering a village
