Description
Long story short, other drawings I had worked on in recent weeks weren't up to snuff IMO. Thankfully, this 6 cm high (2 1/4 inches) pencil sketch, though, THIS sketch I'm' all right with. One of my favorite details is the Mongolian-style hat with the ear-flaps. I figured that in a fantasy setting, characters with long ears are not going to want those ears exposed to below-freezing temperatures or wind.
i.e. I figured that some types of monsters, such as goblins, would want to tuck their ears inside each flap (like a knitted sock for ears) and let the hat's flaps hang loose, rather than pull their ears into unnatural positions. It might look whimsical and silly, but it's a practical compromise between the dilemma of getting pneumonia versus letting a yeti sneak up on you.
That yeti skull atop the bedroll has a story behind it, but it's a little long to type up here.
The bedroll itself serves as a convenient way to stow and retrieve a walking stick, shortbow, and unlit torch. (They're barely visible in the sketch, but they are there.)
As for the snowshoes, I figured that just because Boots of the Winterlands are listed in the DM's Guide does not mean that your preference of greatly-desired perfect-for-your-build magic item will conveniently be on sale at the next shop in the next village.
i.e. I figured that both in terms of the inferred rules and in seeing the situation from the long-term POV of the character, a character's stats and skill proficiencies and class abilities are more reliably within reach than expecting their dream weapon to be inside that next treasure chest. It just doesn't seem that players (or their characters) could assume that the next lake they find will offer up Excalibur.
(Also, snowshoes look good in this composition, and holding them up like that lets the audience know at a glance that these are A Big Deal. Plus, showing the snowshoes in this manner lets the audience get a decently clear look at both the snowshoes and the Mongolian-style gutal boots.)
One last hidden detail is that this particular goblin is depicted here with a slightly straighter back posture than he did in previous sketches and drawings of him. i.e. Gradually from level to level, he has become more of an adventurer and less of a standard roadbump goblin.
