Description

It was early morning, and I had barely started to wake up -out of habit- that our mentors stepped within the apprentices’ den to come get us. You were still soundly asleep, and I looked towards you as Rockjaw stepped in front of me, mimicking my movements by glancing at you, her cold eyes grazing against your warm fur. Hawkstorm woke you up gently, pushing you with his nose and calling out to you, aware that it was very early, and that you weren’t use to waking up at this time, unlike me. You slowly opened your amber eyes, and without greeting me as you used to every time we woke up, you greeted him, asked him where you two would go.

“I’ll teach you to hunt without cover, Featherpaw. In the drylands. It’s a long way, so I needed to wake you up early before the sun rises. I hope you don’t mind.” he meowed so kindly, a voice that my mentor never properly gave me- Always waking me up before the break of dawn, bringing me to harsh places- and as if she read my mind, she also spoke up, giving me a hard stare “Get up Lichenpaw, we’re going to the snake rocks. I’ll teach you to hunt vipers better.” she said in a monotone voice, motioning her tail towards the den’s exist. Hawkstorm glanced at her with a slightly disapproving frown, before telling Featherpaw to go, which she did- Before telling me -and I was sure this would be the last she ever would- “Good luck on your hunt!”. I barely had the time to respond, my ears drooping as I saw my sister’s tail completely disappear through the den’s entrance. Rockjaw squinted at me and repeated “Get up, Lichenpaw.” her tail lightly swishing through the air. It was exhausting to start so early, and I felt alone, even with my mentor. I felt lonely, like a chunk of my heart was missing- And even if my sister wasn’t dead, she might as well have been- I barely saw her, and when I did we didn’t have any time for small talk- I was always too tired, or she was gone when I came back and vice versa. But, I did as I was told, like every morning, and stood up in front of my mentor, lightly shaking my fur, slightly fluffier as my winter coat had grown in.

Rockjaw gave me a slight smile. “Early birds get the worm, Lichenpaw. Let’s go, onwards.” she pressed, before turning back, checking that I was following. I gave myself a lazy stretch as I walked behind her, head hanging slightly low, perking up only when I saw my sister again, going out the border. If there was an advantage to Marshclan’s borders, it was that they were slow to cross- And as such, I had a feeble hope that me and my sister could catch up. Alas, it was not to be, and when me and my mentor crossed the border, we were already going different ways than Hawkstorm and Featherpaw, as they trotted off to the opposite side of the territory, lightly chattering as they went. I had a sorrowful sigh, hidden enough for Rockjaw not to notice and tell me not to let emotions get into the way of my training. I follow, fighting against myself not to drag my feet, as we headed to the snake rocks.
I’d even started to doubt me and Featherpaw were related, it felt as if she had forgotten the times when we were always together. You couldn’t see me without her, or her without me. We’d made up our own hunting techniques, that required two cats, tailored specifically for our builds, for our agility, our strengths and weakness. It’s as if everything had been lost, and she had moved on from our relationship, whilst I hadn’t. She fit so well, training with Hawkstorm and excitedly hopping around camp, and I felt like I stood out: past loner, molly-in-toms-body, halfclan, and filled with an odd mourning of someone that hasn’t died. I wouldn’t leave her side even if it meant I’d die, but I couldn’t say the same about her. I wanted to think it’d all be okay the moment we’d become warriors, but would it ever be the same as it used to be? I shook my head in despair, before my mentor stopped in her tracks. “Lichenpaw, do you see that?” she said, a tinge of fear in her voice- I stepped out towards her, looking from besides her, and I couldn’t help but be shocked, slightly horrified- but mostly confused, dumbfounded at this odd sight. What was this doing here..?
