The feathers where weighed in europe where a ton = 1000 kg (2205 lb), the rocks came from the US where 1 ton = 2000 lb (907 kg).

In the US you use what we used to call a Short Ton = 2000 lbs.
In the UK we used to use what was called a Long Ton = 2240 lbs.
We now use a Metric Ton = 1000Kg = 2204.6 lbs
Hence a ton may not = a ton!
