Description
"Strange were these tall warriors, moving like water and smoke, with never a sound of footfall but with byrnies chiming silvery through the night. Ivory pale, with thin high-boned features, beast ears and blankly glowing eyes, they were a sight of terror to mortal gaze."I've always wanted to try some fantasy illustration, and here I tried something like the old school fantasy inks of Hal Foster, Larry Elmore, and Jeff Easley. And what better way to practice than with a character from one of the fantasy greats, Poul Anderson's The Broken Sword. The costume is partially inspired by the Eternal Guard unit from Warhammer Fantasy's wood elves, with other details cribbed from descriptions from the book, like the little horn ornaments on the helm and Imric's blind-looking elf eyes. I tried to get the high contrast shine of the metal armor to come across in black and white using lowlights of pure black, which doesn't look exactly right combined with the hatching on the flesh and fabric. If I tried again, I would probably try to mix it with hatching to not make it look so out of place.
