Description
Built for heavy goods work, the J Class 4-8-0 is one of the larger steam locomotives in service in modern times.
The Js are designed with a Compound System so they can haul heavier loads beyond 1000 Tons; but as they were in service into the 2000s the Compounding System was removed as loads became lighter as well as shorter. The design of the J Class has a Thompson influence with the placement of the outside cylinders behind the the pilot truck; the boiler is of unqiue design but has some LMS influences; the tender is a hybrid of LMS and LNER designs, i.e. chassis of an LNER Tender with an extended LMS Tender shell; they were also equipped with an SR inspired Tender if the company ordered it with the different tender.
The J Classes were equipped with Yellow Ends in their early life in service but they were removed after 2016 and replaced with yellow buffer ends; furthermore, the running board was painted black.
Variants are:
LMS/LNER Hybrid Tender
SR inspired Tender
