Description
The LNER R3 is 2-10-0 built specifically for heavy freight haulage and long coal runs; The R3 was built in Doncaster Works in 1938 to 1940; only 6 were ever built. The R3s through-out the war were allocated to routes where alot of freight was being shifted or ones still working on the LNER would go into other areas of the UK to help with the heavy haulage of freight. The R3s were very heavy and were semi-limited to areas of the UK to work in (much like it's BR Successor) so it was vital that they were allocated to lines that were able to withstand it's tremendous weight. NE No. 992 (Ex-LNER R3 No. 7702) was temporalily in the Southern Reigon and it briefly encountered a simularly huge steam locomotive with DR written on it's large tender, as it was in a hurry (with a troop train) the driver or the fireman didn't know what they saw.
After the war ended; all 6 R3s would be allocated back into the LNER (now the North Eastern Reigon of British Railways) and continued working until they were all withdrawn and scrapped, and then replaced by British Railways 9Fs; except one, LNER No. 7701 which was placed in an abandoned shed and it was forgotten about until the 1980s in which it was rediscovered and over the span of 18 years No. 7701 was put back into full working order and worked on a couple of preserved railways before being put into Swindon's Locomotion Museum where it is now resting on static display.
