There was a tradition in the village, the Delibana: she was a young girl randomly chosen, for whom a special bridal dress and veil were crafted: they were made of dew and flowers blossoming during a single specific night, and crafted by the members of two families who handed down their secret techniques for generations.
With this attire, the Delibana was greeted goodbye by her kin, and descended into the local mine, deep and deeper, until in the foundations of the stone, in the dark and silence, she could hear pickaxes working.
The Delibana then knew she was into the realm of the Dwarves, who guided her to the subterranean halls were their king sat, were she would have ruled as their queen and his bride.
This was a secolar pact between humans and the dwarves, the later obtaining peace from surface interferences, the first ensuring that their mine, through the little people's magic, would never be devoid of minerals.
The Delibana had to stay down there, far from everyone she was familiar with, for at least 7 years. After that in theory she was allowed to resurface, but the travel to the light's world was so long and risky that usually the girls resolved in spending all their life with the secretive beardy husband and his kin. Until the day the chosen girl and her beloved, the Count'sĀ  son, promised each other to meet again after the first 7 years...

This pic gave made me think a bit of the Delibana looking back one last time at the surface world (despite this not being a mine)
