"So this is how it ends... huh, Sasuke?"

Had he the energy, Sasuke might have turned his head to glare at Naruto. Instead, he drew a careful breath, his chest shuddering from the effort. The snow wasn't as cold as it should have been against his back. Perhaps it was the blood. Perhaps it was something else. His vision was beginning to blur.

"Was it worth it?" Naruto asked.

Sasuke was silent, and Naruto swallowed thickly.

"Sasuke?" he whispered.

"Idiot," Sasuke said, followed by a wet cough. Nearby, snow fell from the boughs of a tree with a quiet plop.

Naruto seemed to understand because he said, "I'm glad."

Sasuke closed his eyes and, together, they waited.
