Description

The Flame debuted in Wonderworld Comics 3, July 1939. On Earth-F young Gary Preston lost his parents as a baby when they were assassinated in China. The assailants knew that Gary was the prophesied "Flame Childe" and were determined to take him before the Lamas of the City of Flames could. In 1920 the High Lama sent the detective, Dr Fung, to seek out an aging gunfighter called The Waco Kid, who had acted in their defense before. Jed Adams was offered temporary custody of the ring destined for the reincarnation of their champion, Wu Deha (Wonderman) and this restored his youth and gave him longevity as The Immortal; Gunslinger.

The Gunslinger and Dr Fung were too late to save Gary's parents, but the baby was rescued and brought up in the City of Flames. Trained from birth and guarded by Adams, at age 20 he returned to America in 1939 as the costumed science hero, The Flame.

Later teaming with Flame Girl, Gary and his partner went on to join all three incarnations of the Mystery Men of America and were still active through the silver and bronze ages. As a bearer of fire energy, The Flame is something of a counterpart to both Marvel's Human Torch and DC's Green Lantern.
