So … this is my entry for NicoB’s Persona contest. I normally steer clear of contests and such, being of the shy sort…. But then, Persona is all about confronting your Shadow, right?
I’m a bit new to the SSLP, but I rather enjoy listening in while doing art stuff. It was fun to work on a Persona piece while, y’know, having Nico play P5 in the background.
The Persona featured here is the Mad Hatter. In Carroll’s Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the Queen claimed that he had “murdered Time” and sentenced him to death; in protest, Time stayed the execution by remaining at six o’clock (neverending tea party lol).
Why the Mad Hatter? Principally, somebody who fashions hats is appropriate for a hat-changer like Nico. For those unfamiliar with the English idiom, “changing hats” denotes juggling multiple roles and jobs, a propos for the Fool Arcana. Additionally, in his “Draw My Life” video, Nico talks about hiding / repressing his funny side from others while he was growing up, and the Hatter projects an interesting mix of zaniness and classiness. He's clever in his madness, y'know?
Bernie looks a little too evil, but she’s supposed to be a Hellhound. I put Monokuma on the XX: Le Diablo card, and the Judge is on the next card behind him.
At this point, I’m questioning basically every design choice I’ve made over the past two weeks, 'cause the flaws of this piece are all too apparent to me. In brief:
- I would have liked to draw Nico in a more dynamic pose, but the composition demanded a more stationary pose. It’s a “quiet moment” in the city, after all.
- I wanted to show the Mad Hatter’s design in full, but placing him away from Nico kinda … lowers the overall energy in the piece, haha v_v. (Plus, I think you can only summon your Persona when you take off your mask, soooo there's that.)
- Joker’s central character conflict is his entrapment. I wanted to use the buildings, alleyway, chainlink fence, and telephone wires to capture a similar trapped, claustrophobic feeling. Instead, the piece feels really somber and lonely to me?
- As usual, my color sense is woefully lacking, so I had a difficult time balancing the hues, saturation, and lighting throughout the composition. I could have used a monochromatic palette, but I can't avoid colors forever. :/
- Even though the background is relatively simple, it demanded a lot of time and attention. I could have used that time and energy to improve on everybody’s design instead. (Also: loose perspective is loose.)
I've learned things! ^_^
Thanks for accepting my humble submission.

EDIT - Thanks so much, Nico! ;_; <- Tears of joy
Not gonna lie, I got really light-headed when I heard the news and legitimately almost fainted. I really wasn’t expecting to win because there were so many beautiful and awesome entries. As an artist, I loved looking through them and seeing how other artists approached their designs. It’s been a very fun and humbling experience.
Thanks for your support, everyone! The comments and favs really mean a lot to me – like, seriously, a lot -- and I’ve been trying to figure out how to respond without being super socially awkward. Aaaand needless to say, I have not yet accomplished that feat, haha ^_^’
