Description

This series is written as excerpts from Dawntreader's Guidebook, a novel written by the trezlin/drakling Tavra Fangrender under a pseudonym to avoid persecution by her own kind. The third entry is on her local dragon species, the trezkul.

Transcript
Forest dragons are the top predator in the forests of the Gren kingdoms and likely the progenitor of the hatred for dragonkind fostered throughout the people. They are thickly built, brawny beasts. Like all dragons, they have four legs and a pair of wings, but you scarce see the wings in use. The dragons prefer to prowl the woods on foot, only spreading their wings for travel over great distances.

Despite the warnings of Gren mothers not to venture into the woods for fear of hordes of hungry dragons ready to snap a small drakling up, the forest dragons are few. Being such large predators, they require massive swathes of territory, leading to an encounter being rather rare. When one does run into them, it is likely to be a youngling. Young forest dragons will stay within the territory of their parents for a period of timebefore finding their own. Additionally, they are also very mobile - while they are still small, the dragons will chase prey through the forest as an active predator, often leading to conflicts between hunting parties and daring juveniles.

Adult dragons will usually lie in wait at the edges of clearings, becoming more known to ambush unsuspecting prey. They will not usually waste time with a band of draklings and prefer to take down thickettreaders and other similar prey.

Larger adults are known to create their own clearings, pushing down trees to create regions of grassland that are appealing to herbivores. The eldest of these beasts take ambush a step further, laying within the forest floor and using their innate nature magics to encourage the growth of plants up and around their bodies. These sorts of traps are intended only for the most worthy prey and are usually set up along known hunting grounds for beasts like griffons or large adult thickttreaders and woodstriders.

While there are myths of fire-spitting forest dragons, none can actually spark a flame. Rather, their bite is the most dangerous part of their being - one that oozes paralyzing venom.

Usually used to prevent flighty prey like woodstriders from escaping, this bite is immensely dangerous to us draklings, as our smaller size amplifies its effects - to the point where it can even stop the heart.

In a way, this is a mercy, for forest dragons will drag their paralyzed prey to their dens to eat alive, which is a much slower and more torturous death. Being extremely solitary, the dragons do not speak any language, but they have been known to be able to learn given the chance. This hints at a higher intellect than expected, but their speech is always very rudimentary, similar to a child's grasp of a tongue.

Despite this intense solitary nature, the dragons will congregate during the fall for a massive migration. Hundreds of dragons migrate to the southern forests and plains, creating a magnificent sight as they fill the skies.
