Description
Rioan grabbed Andel’s hand and turned towards the waterfront, running fast as she could. Mardhul had vanished. Smoke rose in black billows from wooden buildings as they sprinted down the street.A wall of searing fire blazed across their path as the wyvern passed overhead. Behind them the burnt-out shell of a building gave up its strength. It crumbled across the road and into a structure across from it, showering the street with brick and cinders. Rioan stared, looking frantically for an opening; a hole in the walls of flame; some chance to escape.
The only solace was the stone hall and tower that housed the town clock. The hour struck seven and the brass bells began to ring their heavy song, echoing perversely out over the now quiet road.
Rioan bounced nervously on her heels, looking at the hall. She jerked Andel’s arm.
“Come on, the hall will have a back door!”
“Not… Not a good idea.”
Andel shifted back an inch, staring up past the rising smoke, past the eaves of the hall and the clock face on the tower above it. The bells reflected firelight from the belfry as they chimed the final chords of the hour. Rioan looked up to see what had him so transfixed, and gripped his arm tighter.
Perched high upon the bell-tower’s steeple, bathed in a malevolent crimson glow, sat the wyvern.
Kelkolan Chapter 3 ~ Ushikanu

Added my new watermark, fixed some of the colour.
Also I just noticed there was a print request on this. I might consider making up some prints of it if people are at all interested. I'll look into it (:

Edit Just clarifying about Vexus' head, his upper jaw is thin due to his design. Vexus' head shape was modelled after that of a pit viper, and flipped so the thinner mandible was at the top. It does appear a little thinner than it's supposed to be, partially because his eyes were just a little bit too big D: (I went back and fixed it).
The ushikanu don't have a lot of pressure or strength in their jaws at all, which reflects in how thin their upper jaw is. They rely on their size, flight speed, and the weight of their head (by using their head as a wrecking ball of sorts) in itself to bring down prey.
Here's a detail shot of the head (: [link]
Thanks for the feedback, sorry if I confused anyone (:

:3 Vexus says hello.
Scene from Chapter 3 of Kelkolan that I've wanted to illustrate for a long time.
Original file size was..... 5000px wide, this is about half of that. Lots of fun, despite having to stare at it for most of the past two days, I liked working with this, and for a change, I really like how it came out.
Official time of completion, 3:30 am ^^ Common trend - when I work on an arts, I rarely sleep XD
As for the clocktower, two things. Firstly, yes the numbers are written in Ildarie script. Secondly, yes, there are fifteen numbers on the clock, so no it's not an error and yes, I know that generally clocks tend to count to 12 XD. However Feian daily rotation is 30 hours, not 24, so they have 15 hours on their clock (:

That is amazing! Beautifully illustrated I absolutely love the colours. And the composition is really amazing as well. It all brings your eye to the magnificent wyvern in the center ^^

Yes, I was wondering as well if the mouth is closed or open. I'm assuming open, from the stretching skin... I don't mean to be rude. I love the lighting in this piece and overall I think it is very powerful. Excellent stuff.

And each time you surpass your old skill level a bit more. \o/
The only thing i really consider a bit odd in this picture is the lighting on his upper jaw. I don't quite get what its supposed to be.
The snout seems to be closed so it cant be fire - i see the nostrils in that triangular light area as well.
The eyes gloom but not hard enough so the snout can't be so bright. o_O
So what is it?

Oh 2nd approach (since i really like this):
Judging from that reptile-skin at its mouth edges it has to be open. But it seems to be open so wide that you hardly see anything fromt he upper jaw.
So the problem i see here is that his face looks like a distorted demon laugh but not draconic anymore. The eyes are just too close to the open mouth for that.
I took his upper jaws as nostrils resulting him in doing a *pout* emote with the jaws almost fully closed. That's why i got so confused by this look.
^^'' I just meant to help, i hope you understand what i'm tryin to say here.

this came out beautifully. fantastic work on the perspective, and the lighting and the color scheme do wonders for the drama of the scene. very awesome.

Wow, I can tell you spent a lot of time on this. Great work! The lighting effects are phenom! I'm a little confused about his head though...is he currently breathing fire? If so, what happened to his upper jaw?

That was one of my favorite scenes in that book, and I think you did a good job illustrating it. Good to finally hear from you again, and it's a wonderful piece. Great work!
