Serfs have to have efficient haircuts!

Yeah, it's one more thing those poor, simple workers don't have to worry about.

They get to hide their actions from themselves by working for a big machine - they're just following orders after all.Β

Big machine, maybe; beautiful machine, definitely.

So, yeah, this piece is part of a larger series; and that series is part of an even larger sci-fi world that really only exists in my head and in assorted pieces by different artists. This piece actually has links to scenes of Ansley being stopped at a security checkpoint, and another of her being restrained for transport. If you look through Ragadabah's Gallery, you'll find another piece (a huge piece) that depicts Ansley and several other serfs like her working for an expedition to an alien world. The piece is called Jungle of the Star Borne Old Ones.
Ansley started life as a citizen (and is now a serf) of a stellar nation called the Borealis Republic. The Republic places great emphasis on higher education. Noble rank, property, and responsibilities are awarded on the basis of education achieved. Unfortunately for Ansley, she failed the basic exit/citizenship exam that follows the first two years of college. She was traveling when the results became available. So, in part 1 of this series, she is discovering for the first time that she has failed said exam and is wanted by the Republic for reassignment to the serf caste.
The Borealis Republic does not treat their serfs too harshly. They're viewed as equal parts valuable property and wayward children, not able to function without close oversight.Β

That's the thing... the storyline doesn't exist solely in one place. It is a rambling collection of characters, ideas, places, and adventures that is only cohesive in my head (and barely, at that).

Yeah, I sort of imagine this setting as a reflection of the real world. There is plenty of room for one group of people to do bad things to another group, but all is not war. People explore, invent, build, and simply live their lives.

I just magnified the pic or a better look at the details. Ansley's stubble is so nicely done.

Just a bit of detail

The tattoo also looks great when the image is viewed at full-size.

I always question the detail I put into my pictures since the DA versions are usually less than half the size of normal so most people don't have the chance to see any detail. I always do commissions for print size though.Β

Sorry I have been slow to comment. Despite your ligh-hearted style, this is really kind of a scary piece. I love it. I am also excited to see Ansley in uniform, working alongside her fellow serfs. I'm kind of picturing this huge expedition to explore some alien ruins. It is organized by Skye University, the school Ansley attended before failing her citizenship exam and becoming a serf.Β
But first-- more chain gang girls. I'll be in touch regarding that soon.

Yeah dark yet colourful seems to be a thing that comes naturally to me. Making some sort of alien ruins archaeology dig sounds like a really cool idea, I like that sort of thing.

I'm thinking the expedition to the alien ruins could even include a large image kind of like those on your website. I'm picturing a long line of ground vehicles and reptilian mounts being used by the scholars/students with the serfs like Ansley pulling up the rear on foot, acting as porters and carrying heavy packs.
For smaller, individual images (or as parts of the larger image), I can see a group of serfs trying to get one of the ground vehicles unstuck from deep mud; and one of the reptilian mounts affectionately licking Ansley's shaven head. Just some thoughts... and this is all before they make it to the ruins.

Ohh a big pic could be really interesting. Straight away I'm imagining a vertical panorama of some tall structure and all the workers digging down into it. Maybe a bit of a cross section showing the stuff they haven't found yet. ( I don't know if you've read At The Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft but similar to that there could be some hibernating aliens that they come across)Β

Try to get the compete work of Lovecraft, they're all short stories and all worth a read and for the most part they're interconnected.

Dunno why but the torture scene fromΒ V for vendetta sprung to mind when i saw this. Rather unusual scenario.

It is a bit but it seems like this Borealis Republic is cruel to its serfs (as were most of the civilisations in history).
I'll have to watch V for Vendetta again because I only vaguely remember a torture scene in it and I think I confuse it with the one from Brazil anyway. Β

I think i am probably more cruel to the Borealin serfs than the writers who originally designed it.

Borealis Republic? So is this based off a film or actual event.Β
V for vendetta is ok, its one of those films you watch once and never again, just to say hey i watched this XD

Ragadabah In reply to Daisy-Pink71 [2015-08-13 17:52:56 +0000 UTC]
It's neither from a film or a factual place. It's part of a world of some peoples design and has a wiki page that has a lot of information on it tequilastarrise.tripod.com/bor⦠. I can't say much since I'd probably get it wrong XD.
I think with V for Vendetta I'll read the comic before I watch the film again. I think, like Watchmen, it's going to be more appropriate in it's original form. Alan Moore seems like a guy who can use the comic format as a way of telling stories that novels or films can't. (well that's what I got from Watchmen)

Daisy-Pink71 In reply to Ragadabah [2015-08-13 17:57:22 +0000 UTC]
Oh righty i was wondering was these commissions were based off anything.
That answers that.
I think thats better reading the comic first, always find it when films are based off comics/books.

Ragadabah In reply to Daisy-Pink71 [2015-08-13 19:14:42 +0000 UTC]
Haha too late to read the comic first. It's always nice to compare them though. The new(ish - probably quite old now) Total Recall encouraged me to read a lot of Philip K Dicks stories and they are so far gone from the film adaptations it's crazy.Β
