Description 11x14" scratchboard with colored inks. It is based on a photograph I took at the National Aviary in Pittsburgh. This was my first try coloring scratchboard and it was kind of an adventure! I used Winsor & Newton drawing inks first but didn't like them, so I switched to Liquitex drawing ink halfway through and liked that much better.

I gave the original to my great aunt for her 100th birthday in early October 2009. Prints are available (note me.)

I think that is a lovely gift for your aunt. Many people would actually much rather have something you made with all your love (even if it isn't pretty) than something you just went and bought. It's the thought that counts, but it's really a plus that it turned out beatiful!

Wow, happy birthday to your Grandmother at 100!

Beautiful work.. I've yet to try scratch board myself, but I'm terribly excited to do so now that I've seen such beautiful art come from it I love the blues; all-pink flamingos get a little dull after a while and it's nice to see some variation. I love the detail in the feathers as well, lovely work!

This is gorgeous. I love scratchboard, and I'm pretty familiar with using color to help enhance some pieces on it, but I really love your use of inks on this one. What type of inks do you use that are so semi-transparent?

Again, gorgeous!

I used Winsor & Newton drawing inks at first but didn't like them at all, so then I got some Dr. Ph Martin's Bombay ink and I liked that much better. So, both brands of ink are on there, but I can only recommend one.

Awesome. Thank you so much for taking the time to share your advice. I'd like to give your technique a try. I'm sure it won't look anywhere near amazing as your piece, but it's definitely inspired me to see what I can come up with. Thanks again!

freakdearts [2009-10-24 16:15:38 +0000 UTC]

so wait you put the inks down first in the general forms of color it would be or you added them after you scratched it out?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to freakdearts [2009-10-24 18:46:01 +0000 UTC]

I scratched everything out first, then painted over it with ink. When it dried, I scratched more detail into the inked places, then covered it with another layer of ink. Since the ink is transparent, the places that had been freshly scratched had a light color while the places that already were inked became more intense. I hope I'm explaining it well. D:

If you're making your own scratchboard, coloring it first and then laying black over it is totally possible! And in fact, I think that's the norm...? At least, for homemade ones. I bought my scratchboard, though, so if I want it to have color I have to put it on myself afterward.

It is really great stuff! I know it is expensive, but you should buy some metallic scratch board. It's metal base allows for much smoother and detailed etching. The only drawback is you cannot really color it, as it is metal. You can buy it in silver, gold, and copper. It is really worth the extra money!
