Description Todays’ endangered shark species for Shark Week is the beautiful oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus), another requiem shark and one of my personal favourites. This is an open ocean species well known for its’ aggression, as living in the barren emptiness of the open sea means it can’t afford to let any potential meal pass it by, or tolerate any competition. As a result, it is believed to be responsible for several shark attacks and may have acted as a cleanup crew at shipwrecks, including the famous S.S. Indianapolis, although eye-witness accounts claim most of the victims died of exposure and the sharks merely arrived to scavenge the corpses.

The oceanic whitetip is characterised by its’ large, rounded fins. Unfortunately, these fins have made it one of the most targeted species for the infamous shark fin soup industry. This combined with overfishing of its’ already scarce prey has resulted in a catastrophic drop in this sharks’ numbers; between 1992 and 2000, oceanic whitetip numbers fell by over 70% in the North and Central Atlantic, and as much as 99% in the Gulf of Mexico.
