Description
"Who am I? I'm Risky Boots, queen of the Seven Seas, and anyone who opposes me will be crushed flat! Men!! Spank this one extra hard for mommy!"So, I played Risky's Revenge on iOS and at least attempted the original Shantae Gameboy game online. The latter is a really slow burn, and literally every single element of it was improved upon in later installments. I think it's due for a remaster, especially since it's not easily accessible like the other four. Someday I'll get through it.
As for Risky's Revenge, you could tell WayForward was still trying to find their footing with this franchise. The character illustrations aren't as strong or as appealing, and there aren't really a whole lot of places to explore. The map is small, and it's not always clear where you're supposed to go. It took me forever to find Rottytops in the beginning, and the instructions aren't repeated, so I ended up wandering the map trying to figure out here to go. I think the desert is the worst. It's far too big and the shortcuts aren't easy to navigate at all, and the map is completely useless, as it doesn't give you a precise location of where you are. The story is good enough, and although Risky is a somewhat generic villain, it's nice that her plan actually seems to not only work, but have lasting effects that affects Shantae's growth and development, though it's unclear as to how or why her prehensile hair whips come from her human half and not her genie half. It establishes Risky as a threat and not just a tired villain-of-the-week.
I liked Risky's Revenge, but it was too short and difficult to navigate. Also, not enough Rottytops.
