Description Some people treat DeviantArt as a dump site for their snapshots of themselves, their family, their party times with zero attempt at creativity. The only watchers/watchees they have are people like them with similar photo dumps.

That's not art. That's attention whoring. Take it to Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, or any of the dozens of sites devoted to social networking if you don't respect this place.

dA was created by artists for artists as a mechanism for appreciation, networking, sharing, and education... using it as Flickr or Facebook is an abuse of this website and a waste of everyone's time.

My message is not "keep away unless you're an artist." Rather, GIVE ART A TRY. At least pretend you respect this wonderful free service and its unique existence.

Not an artist? Bullshit. Make an effort. Write your first poem. Take a picture of something other than your bewbs or drunken pals. Play with Photoshop filters. Go nuts and favorite a few gigabytes of awesomeness from the dA firehose of galleries.

Or go back to Facebook, if they'll have you.

I agree with you. I'm tired of seeing all the stuff that should be on Facebook on here. Like all the pictures taken with cellphones. I would understand if it was something to do with nature but not some person standing in front of a mirror looking like an idiot.

Exactly.

And if you're going to go to the trouble of camera-phoning yourself in a mirror, at least be naked.

Erm, artistically naked.

No camera phoning at all. That isn't art!!! Its stupid and people need to stop doing it. Its getting seriously old. I have a cell with a cam and I one never took picks in front of the mirror thinking I look cool and two I only took like 3 or 4 pics. People are too wrapped up in there damn phones it makes me sick.

OMG YES. YES. It's really sad going on DeviantArt and seeing your home filled with low quality photos taken at the mirror or with the webcam. I mean, everyone can post their photos, but only if they have an artistic value.

If someone asked me whether or not deviantART is facebook, I would disagree on the side of "mega social posting" but agree on the fact that you are able to chat and converse, albeit more specifically on artwork, but still nonetheless.
However, I also agree that there should be skill put into work and it should be that: "Artwork".

snapshots are art ..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalfMaximus In reply to gelo-tim [2012-01-09 15:24:01 +0000 UTC]

They can be. But usually they're not.

Artists define "snapshots" as just pointing the camera at something and hitting the button; what happens on vacations and at birthday parties. These are rarely considered art, unless you're into "found art" or combine these into a bigger work. There's nothing wrong with snapshots. They can be lovely memories. But they're usually nothing special.

A photographer creates art through careful planning, proper equipment, framing, and an intuitive eye. There may be costumes or props involved, or sometimes an hours-long wait for just the right kind of sunlight. Often, hundreds of images are shot and then sorted through later to choose "the best one". There may or may not be post-processing involved.

The level of investment is different. Creating art requires skill, time, and devotion. A snapshot is just pressing the button on your camera phone.

That's the point I was trying to make.

gelo-tim In reply to RalfMaximus [2012-01-09 16:41:52 +0000 UTC]

That was a wise talk from a wise man

but sometimes snapshots are greater than a "planedshots" like this one :[link] (It's not great)I've just pulled up my camera and pressed the button

anyway . deviantart made a category for snapshots . maybe because they considered it as art or maybe because they found lot's of people had submitted their snapshots ..

that's what I think ^^

You're not the type of person this rant was written for back in 2009.

The folks that pissed me off back then were vapid empty souls who do nothing but take pictures of themselves & their friends with their camera phones. GPOYs, all nearly the same.

No attempt at creativity, nothing to set the pictures apart from their facebook ID.

You're not doing that.

actually theres a lot of thing that their different about
but saying you get more privacy in DA than in Facebook? hell no

you don't see a front page showing the photos of everyone on Facebook and can just look at them without being friends
or just click on anonymous user and be on some else's wall. And in DA you don't have the choice of letting only your friends view your profile or deviations. It is way more open and social than Facebook.

thats actually one of the things I like about DA

for my DA is better than facebook, because I see art here, well I do not make art, I am a wannabe writer, I write a novel about crime and a children's story for a contest, I like to draw, but I have no camera , well I I think being a photographer is an art, for example, someone takes a picture of a beautiful landscape or a queen of carnival

I know I shouldn't care about what other people do with their lives but, I. HATE. THE. CHECK-IN. What annoys me the most about Facebook is when people TELL. EVERYONE. WHERE. THEY. ARE. I mean, no one wants to know that and do you want people to know where you are so people can stalk you? I also hate it when people GIVE. OUT. THEIR. NUMBER. on Facebook. I don't mind it when people give their number privately when they PM that person but I hate it when people give out their numbers like that.

The ironic thing is, I am addicted to Facebook and those things are annoying even for me.

PS: Sorry for abusing the caps. I didn't mean to.

RalfMaximus In reply to BoredKid16 [2011-07-05 13:45:19 +0000 UTC]

Funny thing about Facebook is... many FB users hate it. Even the folks who use it daily and self-describe themselves as "addicted" loathe it.

The reasons why are many, but mostly boil down to the FB experience itself: too cluttered, too busy, too easy to spew TMI (as you suggest). So easy to permafuck your life with unwanted visitors peeping your stuff you THOUGHT was private. For instance, it's common practice for employers to deep-mine Facebook via the partner API for details you wouldn't dare post in public. If Facebook has it, "partners" can see it.

Plus the company treats FB users as cattle. In fact, you're not a customer... Facebook's customers are the companies it sells your data to. No, you're a RESOURCE to be consumed and exploited.

All it'll take is one strong competitor (Google?) and FB will deflate the same way MySpace did. There will be a mass-migration away from Facebook that'll be epic.

Someday soon, perhaps.

Yes. I hope so too. At least Facebook don't have that much pedophiles like MySpace does. However, I saw on the news that people who met others through Facebook got robbed and such.

I also don't want to be prank called, that is why I don't give out my number publicly.

This is just too true. I always wonder what people think uploading snap shots of eg a party. I just don't see any justification for that.

I agree! Sometimes I see people upload a huge amount of repetitive photos of themselves that aren't even meant to be artistic. They look like myspace/faceboook profile pictures. It's just very annoying to have them clog up dA like this.

RalfMaximus In reply to LosingMary [2011-05-05 13:27:52 +0000 UTC]

There's so much. But here's one thing, possibly the most troubling...

Firstly, understand that Facebook not only tracks the obvious stuff (your posts, chat sessions, likes, etc) and anything your friends have posted about you, IT ALSO TRACKS anything FB can link to your profile anywhere on the web.

In other words, click on a link at some random website, and if they have an agreement with FB, that activity is recorded and sent back to FB.

Got that? Worrisome, but not too unexpected. FB now knows what kind of web sites you visit, the frequency, and what you do there. No worries, unless you're doing something you'd prefer remain private.

Now, factor in the agreement you signed when you joined FB, the one that states THEY OWN ALL THAT STUFF ABOUT YOU. It's theirs to do with as they like, despite anything else your privacy settings may imply.

Now here's the really scary part: despite those privacy settings, not just that public stuff but ALL YOUR PERSONAL DATA is shared with "partners" who sign up with Facebook. That is, companies (even those without web sites) who agree to share THEIR data about you with FB also get 100% access to your FB data via their SDK.

That means anyone who sets up a web presence and signs up with FB as a partner gets everything. Not just what you say is "public" via your privacy settings; EVERYTHING. Addresses, phone numbers, all your email addys, chat session logs, and of course a complete history of everything you've ever "liked"... since that's what really makes advertising companies drool.

And it's not just random companies any more. Schools, employers, banks, and the government agencies are now utilizing "partner" agreements with FB to learn more about the people they deal with.

Shit, *I* can do it, if I sign up as a partner. I run a software company, after all.

Why does any of this matter? Why should you care? Here's just a few reasons:

How'd you like your photos used by advertising companies as stock imagery? You've already agreed to that. Facebook owns your photos.

Ever bought anything thru a FB partner? How'd you like your street address available to any mouth-breathing perv with "partner" status? Oh, and your photos too, so he knows what you look like.

How'd you like to apply for a job, only to be turned down because you slammed their products 3 years ago in a chat? Facebook never forgets.

How'd you like your name & photo used to endorse a politician or movement you loathe? Political campaigns mine Facebook like crazy.

This partner-sharing is just one thing FB does. There's tons more... and if you say to yourself "well, I'm safe because I never gave them my private info" that doesn't matter. THEY ALREADY HAVE IT because of all the cross-traffic with partners, one of which DOES have your private vitals and shared it.

As you can tell, I am a bit irritated with them.
