Description
D&D Miniatures Box Cover; Β©Wizards of the CoastAcrylic, Approx 12.5" x 12.5".
Original artwork SOLD.
The warrior Shadow Flayer stands ready to strike infront of the archway, eager for his next victim...
I was commissioned to provide box cover art for the next set of D&D miniature booster boxes. They are an unusual tetrapak shaope which presented some challenges, and also needed to be clearly readable on the shelf.
I chose the archway to frame the figure, and also had that as a back light source to help bring out the silhouette of the flayer, where the darkest values are also placed.

I'm not sure about the torch. Aren't mindflayers like most other underdark races that don't like light or fire? Otherwise a great work I especially like the holes in the skulls and the spider motiff on the archway.

Fair point, but I thought it added a nice contrast, and I needed a decent light source of some description.
Glad you picked up on the details, thanks

The crystals seem to have their own light source, which looks really cool by the way. But also you need to keep in mind that underdark creatures have darkvision and so do not need a light source. Of course we need one to see, you can't just give WotC a black card and say "use your darkvision" haha. My point is though that you could have shown the details without a perceivable light source in view. Just something to think about

True, but the orange flame also acts as a colour contrats and focal point, it also ties in with the two other box covers, but fair point.

Agreed, mindflayers don't like chicken pot pie, canned whipped cream or peanut butter on celery stalks either.

Hmm, can't remember now - maybe 20-30.
No layers, all acrylic.

I really like how you played with the perspective on this one, pushing the direction of the arch, spears and the crystals on the wall in one direction and the torch and flayers spear in the other, a very sub-tile fish eye lens effect. The use of light purple in the crystals and the placement of them was a masterful choice in application.
Nice piece indeed!

Yeah, I think he is a new take on the Mind Flayer - an even nastier beastie
For the metal I just adopted almost white for the highlights, with reflected colours in the shadows.
