Ah, this was good fun! The one thing I really wanted to see in Florida other than a magnificent frigatebird (which I DID see btw, win!) was a gopher tortoise. I went nearly the whole trip without seeing one and was feeling mighty sorry for myself. Then, on the highway, my buddy and I saw a large adult trying to cross! Needless to say I was leaping out of the car before it could stop and running the tortoise out of harm's way - mercifully there was not much traffic that day and passing cars made room. In retrospect this was the very dangerous, silly sort of behavior I caution kids against when I give wildlife talks, but I was much too excited to contain myself. The tortoise was safely delivered to the direction it was heading and hopefully avoided any further obstacles.
