Description
When I first took this photo - an error with shutter speed - I initially found it humerous. Now it makes me a bit sad, because it makes me think of the day this little crab's life was changed when he was caught for the pet trade.Hermit crabs are 100% wild caught, unsustainably, for the pet trade. Most do not live a fraction of their potential 20+ year lifespan in captivity, dying in transport, pet stores, or from poor husbandry once purchased. The misconceptions about these fascinating crustaceans are rampant, and they are commodified on a phenomenal with no regard to their wellbeing nor their status as wild animals that rightly deserve to remain wild. Please, DO NOT buy hermit crabs, ever, and if you want a crab, adopt one of the many unwanted crabs out there needing responsible homes.
