Yep, haven't drawn butts for a looong time. And this time I got a bit educational. And it gets more interesting when we're talking about big assets, of course, heh.I'm starting to go to a gym, so I'm trying to remember all muscle names and being more aware of them (some years have passed since I knew them all from school, heh), especially in shape and movement. Learning basic anatomy to draw in a realistic way is a must, and as I don't practice this too often, now I feel kinda motivated.
Note that I'm not an anatomy expert, I know this just by plain observation (and experience).

Btw: Any preference? A well shaped muscular butt: nice. But, as some ancient and wise poet said once: "I like big (fat round) butts and I can not lie".

If I gonna talk about butts I probably end up talking a lot of crap.
Seriously I like many types of butts all from tiny small smooth butts to insane big ones. Well not "elephant size" that is a bit much.
I most like the smooth juicy big butts then the strong big butts. Mainly because I like to feel that softness. So if I gotta choose of one of the two in this drawing I be choosing the huge and juicy one. My lady got one of those and she sure is awesome.
I not sure why I like big juicy butts but it might be because I am a big lazy ass myself.
Then again there so much more about women then their butts.......

To some extent the shape of the pelvis determines the size of the butt. My wife has always had a big butt and wide hips even before she gained weight to make them bigger. A wide pelvis and one that angles back can make the butt larger without muscle or fat being involved. Specifically a platypelloid pelvis can make the hips wider (as in pear-shaped in extreme cases) and an anthropoid pelvis can make the butt stick out more (Sir Mix-A-Lot says hello).
Interestingly pelvis types are strongly connected to race and women of African descent have a higher tendency to have an Anthropoid pelvis, which is part of why even slim black women are more likely to have a larger butt than other races. (I think Asian women have a higher tendancy toward the Android pelvis, which is shaped more like a man's pelvis and leads to having poorly defined hips.) Keep in mind, though, these are statistical tendencies and obviously don't account for every member of the race.
It's mostly a big deal when a woman is about to give birth because pelvis types that aren't the ideal feminine gynecoid can cause problems during childbirth. It's good, though, to keep in mind as an artist.
