Trials of Ukuni.

By FOXCARROTS

Part Seven

“The Trophy Garden.”

As Ukuni and Comet moved on they discovered yet another cave, this one larger than the others. They felt like they were lost in an unending labyrinth but felt thankful they could move at all. They could almost feel the glue still on their feet, like a curse that hasn’t been fully lifted, calling to their soles like a threat.

Inside the next cave the pair was faced with a sight they could not reconcile.  In this massive cavern they realized there were people that weren’t monks or ninjas who had become victims of the octopus. There were all sorts of women from the town all brought there by the beast and all entombed in its adhesive goo. The entire floor seemed to be a sea of slime, in it, dozens upon dozens fought their sticky bonds.  It was not like the monks and ninjas, who strained to get past the defences of the octopus, these were its proud victims...it's trophies.

“We are here to help.” Comet assured. “One way or another!”

“There is no help for us.” A well-dressed woman said from the side. She stood tall and proud, but her feet were slimed up to her ankles in the goo, clearly demonstrating that she was rooted in place. “We are all stuck!”

“How do we get unstuck?” A buff blacksmith demanded from nearby as he tugged on her trapped legs. She was up to her knees in a hole in the ground and though her muscular thighs strained against it she could not set a foot out of the little hole that was her prison.

“We are open to suggestions.” Ukuni said as she crossed her arms. “Give us some ideas and we will try them.”

“No idea!” another called out, a female soldier in full armor. She was stuck on her hands and knees, her wrists trapped in the goo to her forearms. “I can't break free no matter what I do.”

“Has anyone managed to get free?” Comet called out. “There must be someone!”

Trapped women began to shout out to each other for any developments against the goo.  Although all were working together to try and pull each other out, none seemed to be making any headway.

“Were all still stuck.” A woman in a baker’s apron called out. She was stuck on the floor, her butt and soles glued tight to the ground. “No one has managed to free anything that has gotten stuck.”

“What about you two?” Ukuni said to a kneeling by a pair of girls near her at the edge. They were not directly in the pools of goo but stuck, nonetheless. One was pretty and athletic with dark hair, the other was curvy and redheaded. They were sitting facing each other. They both appeared to be only stuck by the soles of their feet which were pressed against the soles of the other girl. Ukuni inquired further. “Do you have any ideas to how we get you all out of here or how we get past and find the Octopus?”

“Does it look like we can do that much?” The dark-haired girl asked as she strained with one of her feet, finding only a couple inches of slack before it smacked her sole back to the other woman’s foot. “Everyone...is...stuck!”

“There is no way free of this crap.” The redheaded girl cried. She leaned forward and grabbed her ankles, pulling up with them to reveal the glue at the back of both girls’ heels was tethered to the ground. Not only were the two girls stuck together by the soles of their feet they were linked to the very spot. “We are bound to this stuff, and no one can set us free!”

“How did you even get in that predicament?” Ukuni asked. “Sole to sole like that?”

“It’s kind of embarrassing.” The brunette admitted. “You might not believe it.”

“Well, you might as well tell us.” Comet said as she examined the glue that bound the girls’ soles together with a small knife. Though she could manipulate it with the knife and stretch it she could not cut or break it.

“We are rivals.” The redheaded girl admitted. “We were fighting over a dress when we heard something bubbling up from the sewers. We went to take a look and soon thereafter found ourselves here.”

“It was all her fault!” The brunette demanded. “We started to fight even when the creature was trying to decide what to do with us. We started kicking and wrestling at each other and here we are.”

“It is beyond humiliating.” The redhead said with a sigh. “Can you get us out of this?”

Comet sprayed the last of the spray she had used on the stuff earlier, but it had absolutely no effect. The glue seemed stronger, tighter, like it was the best goo the creature had. “I’m sorry I can’t set you loose from this stuff. I can’t free anyone.”

Comet was conflicted, she wanted so desperately to help these women, but she knew that they were even more trapped then the others in the previous caves. The other rooms were meant as protection...these victims were the ones that the octopus liked, his garden of trophies for him to enjoy whenever he wanted to. The development made Comet sick to her stomach, she had to do something...if she could not help them, she had to see to the octopus and find a solution.  However, this proved a problem, this goo was unlike the other stuff, it was thick and goopy, promising to imprison any flesh it encountered.  Even with the coating of pepper, Comet knew she and Ukuni would sink into the stuff, and it would lock any limb it enclosed around.  There seemed no way forward, no rocks, no where to climb, just a seemingly unending array of stuck bodies.  That is when Ukuni had an idea.

“I got something but you all won’t like it!” Ukuni said as she psyched herself up. “I must use you all as steppingstones so that I can finally confront that invertebrate responsible for all this.”

“Steppingstones?” One of the girls asked, clearly not sure what Ukuni had meant.

However, as Ukuni stepped off of the rocky shore and onto the back of the nearest girl it became all too clear. Her weight pushed the girls front deeper into the goo but there was not all that much the stuck girl could do about it.

“Hey!” The girl shouted. “I am not your footstool!”

“Unfortunately, this is the only way.” Comet replied as Ukuni moved to the next girl and she followed her onto the back of the first stuck girl. “I thank you all for your help and after this is over, we will stop at nothing in finding a way to get you all free.”

The pair leapt from girl to girl, careful to place their feet on stable parts of the women as they moved across. Each girl was plunked further into the goo and complained as they went by.  However, this being the only real hope they had of escape in the long run each girl did not get too angry.  Soon Comet and Ukuni arrived at the other side, their bare feet on un-sticky solid ground.  They looked back to the girls trapped behind them.

“Thank you for your assistance.” Comet said with a nod before moving further into the lair and their final confrontation with the octopus.  She tried to ready herself, to clear her mind and think of what needed to be done and not the stuck horror that laid in their wake. The octopus would pay for what it had done and today was the day it would happen.

As Comet and Ukuni moved they grew more and more cautious.  The creature had an amazing understanding of mysterious sea biology and was both cunning and savage. They drew their weapons and inched forward, hoping that they could be ready for the next challenge as they were the last ones. The rays of light coming from above did not illuminate the entire lair and they knew the beast could be hiding anywhere.

“You impressed me?” A strange deep inhuman voice called from the darkness. “You have come further than any before you.”

“I was not aware you could talk.” Ukuni admitted, trying to pinpoint the creature in the darkness. “Though with how cunning your traps were, I am not surprised.”

“I am both ancient and powerful.” The octopus replied. “I am so interested in the women of your kind, but few provide me much entertainment.  I feared that I would tire of this place and would have to move on to more...interesting prey.”

“This is your last stop!” Comet challenged, still moving through the darkness slowly. “I will end you now!”

“Will you now?” The octopus replied, a tentacle lashing out of the darkness in a blur and striking the knife in Comet's hand. The knife spun from her hand, disappearing into the darkness and splashing into a pool of water beyond.  Comet nursed her hand, still stinging from the impact.

“How do we free all of those girls?” Ukuni demanded, straining to keep her voice calm and composed. “Perhaps if you free them, we could offer you mercy.”

“I would die before I freed even a one of them!” The octopus challenged. “They are mine as soon you shall be as well.”

“We will never be yours!” Ukuni shouted defiantly. “I will defeat you and I will find a way to free the others!”

“Only by my death will the goo release it’s victims!” The octopus called out defiantly.

“So be it!” Ukuni shouted. “I like it better that way!”

Comet then became aware of something tickling her achilles tendons.  She looked down and realized she had made a terrible mistake.  She had moved so she was standing in one of the shadows and did not see two tentacles slowly reaching out to grasp her.  Before she could even react, the octopus wrapped a tentacle around each ankle and tightened it...trapping her in place as if locked in manacles. Comet Struggled to move her feet but found the octopus had a strength she could not overcome.  Another tentacle came out of the dark, this one going around her waist.  She struggled against it but as the tentacle started to come away, she realized the suckers had created seals on her flesh.  She strained and pulled, her skin stretching the suckers, but they stubbornly refused to separate.

Ukuni moved to help but jerked to stop. She looked down in shock and realised that in the distraction of Comet being grabbed, the octopus managed to get a hold of both of her wrists. She fought to keep hold of her sword but could not move her wrists far to swing it.

“You might as well give up.” The octopus replied. “My suckers cannot be escaped unless I will it.”

Comet continued to struggle but found the octopuses words were quite true.  The tentacles were as strong as the trunks of elephants and the suckers were locked to her like they were attached surgically.  She was at the creature’s mercy and there as little she could do about it.  Ideas and strategies went through her head but as if sensing she still might have options, the octopus stuck again.  Three more tentacles lashed out, one grabbing a wrist each and one around her neck.  Comet was then lifted off the ground, her arms stretched straight above her, and her legs opened. The octopus held her like an X and she could no nothing but flex her muscles and hang there helplessly.

More tentacles lashed out at Ukuni. She managed to keep one of her ankles out of the creatures grasp but her other ankle and neck were snagged. She fought to keep her one leg free but dropped her sword. The octopus seemed happy to keep her as she was, giving her a small sense of freedom.

Knowing that its attacker was at its mercy the octopus came out of the shadows.  It was magnificent in it's spectacle and larger than any accounts had described it. It was a mutant with many tentacles, more so than the creature it resembled. It moved on land as fluidly as it did in the water, and it knew that this was its lair and it had command here.

“You are both strong I will give you that.” The octopus replied in a mocking tone. Though you can move slightly you are not even close to breaking my grip.  Surrender to me now and you will be my ultimate treasures...at least until I bore of you.”

“I will never surrender!” Ukuni replied in defiance, looking like she wanted to tear the beast apart.

“There is not much you can do about it.” The octopus said as it moved closer to Ukuni, putting its massive head right by her face. It was mocking her, showing her that it had indeed won. “What could you hope to accomplish?”

“Getting the knife with my toes!” Ukuni said defiantly. The creature’s eyes went wide as it realised it’s mistake. Ukuni had spotted Comet’s discarded knife and got to it with her free foot. She had a tight grip on it between her toes and she drove it up into the creature’s flesh and in toward its brain. Though it was not exactly an octopus it had similar enough biology for Ukuni to find what she needed. She drove the knife in, and the beast was dead before it could even feel the thrust.

The creature slumped to the ground and the tentacles released. The creature was dead, and all of its powers were shrivelling away.

They could hear cries from the trophy garden and the unbreakable goo began to unstick from all it’s victims. Soon everyone would be free from their bonds and able to escape.

“I think this is it.” Ukuni said as she looked at the knife. “The brain matter of the octopus. I can’t say how I know but this is it, what Lunabelle needs to start making the magic to free herself.”

“Then we did it!” Comet replied. “We accomplished the mission and freed everyone!”

With a flash they were magically transported back to where they had started with Lunabelle and the Alchemist in front of them.

“The knife please.” Lunabelle said as she reached a hand out to Ukuni.

Ukuni handed it over and went to take a step but found an all too familiar feeling under her soles. “What the actual fuck?”

“You put us back in the glue?” Comet said as she savagely strained against her sticky bonds that were back stuck just as they were before. “Why did you put us back in the glue?”

“This is but one component I need.” Lunabelle admitted. “There will be others. I will be back soon to talk about your next mission.”

“You can’t leave us like this!” Ukuni demanded but back in the glue she new she could do little to the treacherous genie.

Lunabelle snapped her finger and disappeared, freeing the alchemist but leaving Ukuni and Comet glued just where they were stuck for so long before.

“I really don’t like that genie.” Comet admitted.
