Pillywiggins
A Pillywiggin is the name for little flower fairies with blue wings and buglike features, or so we have assumed in the modern era, trying to pin down the historical origin of these tiny creatures and what they originally looked like is a big task, there are no specific written references to ‘Pillywiggins’ before 1970, most original writings of fairie legends in Great Britain are hundreds of years old...
It is entirely possible that the Pillywiggin as we know it today is a more modern invention, or a story passed down orally that became confused with other folklore.
The name is similar to Pigwiggin, which refers to a small inconsequential creature and the fairy tale of Skillywidden a fairie child adopted by humans, neither has any specific relationship to flowers.
Perhaps a more scholarly folklore enthusiast than myself may yet pin down their true origin and their true nature, are Pillywinggins gentle harmless creatures? or troublesome pests as other legends claim... how like the fae to be so ambiguous.
