But have you ever had one of those strange experiences where wildlife (I mean really wild, the kind that would never ever come within a mile from a human being) suddenly approach you as if it was tame? It has happened to me a couple of times, this sunday it happened again. We were walking along the beach, when I see this rare seabird (I dont even know its name, because I've never seen one before) swimming around maybe 30 feet from the shore. I tell my girlfriend to take a look at it, because I thought it was cute how extremely fat it was (practically an orb with feet). So we stop and stare at this bird. Suddenly it swam directly into us, stepped up on the beach on weak legs, and let me pick it up! It was obviously weak and fatigued, so while warming it in my hands, I started walking back towards our car to give the bird some fresh water. It was parked about 45 minutes away. The bird was just sitting there in my hands, looking to both sides, never moving its legs or trying to get away. After 30 minutes walk, the bird suddenly flapped its wings for about 2 seconds, then it died, instantly.. Right there in my hands.. I might be very sentimental, but I found this experience to be both amazingly beautiful and really sad. It reminded me of my own fear of dying alone.. Animals dont really know about that kind of fear, I know.. or I was told.. or I hope so..

Amazing picture, love the time-exposure, give it an amazing effect. The picture itself tells an amazing story, but the story you told is indeed touching, I love this.

That kind of thing happened to me when i was kid, a pelican had a broken wing and couldnt hunt anymore so he was quite weak. It's strange how he acepted our help as we took him, as if he knew his fatal destiny. The thing i could remember very well was looking through his eyes, he was stearing at me all the time, and by moments closing his eyes...It's defenetely an experience that made me get closer with nature.

I've had the exact opposite of your experience. Driving home I passed what appeared to be an injured sparrow in the middle of the road. It had probably been hit by a passing car I figured. Couldn't bear thinking of it lying there half dead though, so I turned around, planning to run it over and put an end to whatever pain it might be in, but missed. Turned back again, and missed it once more, so I pulled over to check on the poor thing. The bird actually appeared to be alive and unhurt, so I took it in my hands and walked back to the car. It sat still in my lap all the way back home (a 20 minute drive), and then, the second I unbuckled and opened the car door, it just took off. Me trying to kill the cute little bird probably saved it's life

Nice shot by the way!

maybe... the bird just wanted to be in the hands of a potenial best friend, in the hands of someone who cared enough to stick around- even if for just the moment.

to death did you guys part..

I don't know which I enjoyed more your photograph or your story - although perhaps enjoy for the story is not the right word, it is certainly a moving story and your photo is ethereal - perhaps they do go together?? xx

it probably could feel it was dying
animals.. when they are dying they don't really show fear, or when they're sick.. they're not able to function properly and for some reason just don't act on instinct
although this story is quite interesting.. how it came toward you.. it is really sad..

what a cool experience. what are the odds that you of all people (if anyone at all) should be walking by when this odd little bird swam in to shore? I would chalk that one up to life-changing exeriences and appreciate the fact that I got to be there for it.
I can't help but think that it has to be in our nature to be compassionate like that, even to creatures that we're unsure even understand it. deserving it isn't part of the equation. I still wish I could understand it.

Aww, that's so sad! I had a similar experience with a baby mockingbird in my backyard. It had gotten lost from its mother, and I took care of it until the mother came back. Even though I had touched it, the mother still took care of it, but two days later, when she had left it to hunt for some food, two squirrels mauled it to death. It was terrible....

But about the picture...great work, once again!
