Description Tried to tune down a Roman-wank I had in my head, and this is what I came up with.

Thanks to a continuation with the successful Flavian dynasty Rome managed to prosper, and the continued use of client kingdoms managed to keep the barbarians off Roman land. Rome strengthened its position just by existing, expanding with leaps and bounds, followed by waves of Romanization and isolationism. Butterflies didn't manage to stop the birth of a Genghis-analogue, and the Mongol Hordes swept Asia. The advanced horse-riders managed to penetrate Roman defenses, but the lands were too Romanized to settle and the Mongols were soon kicked out. The Khans spent more time on internal politics, which lead to a dynastic change in the Khanates rather than collapse, much like a more successful Yuan China.

While the Mongols were busy with conquering Japan and South-East Asia, the Romans were colonizing the new world. Terranova (Mexico) and the Taino Islands (Caribbean) were to first to be colonised, with the Aztecs being slaughtered like in OTL. However, later colonization in Hesperidia Septentrionali (North America) the Roman culture of bathing lead to no cross-contamination wiping out much of the indigenous population. These colonists worked and lived along side the natives, and by their independence 300 years later they were Hesperidians, not Natives or Romans.

The wave of Hesperidian decolonization hit Rome hard, and they lost their grip on Indus (I think you can guess what this is in OTL) as well as South Africa. East Africa had been truly Romanized due to their importance, but even they wanted more autonomy with the economic power they controlled. Luckily for the independent nations, who were sure they were going to be swallowed up by the Khanate, the Asian empire was experiencing its worst civil war, as pro-Mongol and pro-Han armies battled it out. This era of global civil unrest weakened both Rome and China's grip on the world.

Now, Rome and the new pro-Han Khanate still fight, if with lackluster and without any real purpose or justification. All of Hesperidia is now independent and highly democratic, a complete opposite to Eurasia. Even the Empire of Terranova, who desperately want to show the world how good they can fight, has recently outlawed slavery and public execution. The Hesperidian Union is a democratic liberal paradise, and the government is run by hippies, effectively. This type of rule is reactionary to the type of government that goes on Continentally. Rome is a theocratic autocracy, with the Emperor being the Pope, the King, and the General of the Army rolled into one. The senate is a shadow of itself, and is only there to show their support of the Emperor. Hitler can only dream of the control and devotion of the populace, a third of which are slaves, that the state has. Titus' theory of the "Popular Emperor" has resonated into the present day, and the Roman propaganda machine goes at a rate that would make Goebbels blush.

The Khanate is a bit better, in that the populace doesn't give a rat's arse what is going on unless it has something to do with the Army. Over 1/4 over its 2.4 billion population is in the military, and that is without forced conscription. The Eternal War with Rome is what fuels the Khanates control, and the populace can't remember a time without the Latin Menace.

Rome's advanced tactics and ruthless efficiency has not been able to break the 40 year stalemate, thanks to the Khanate's sheer numbers and industrial output. The lands of Malrussia (Siberia) are soggy, radioactive deserts, with most of the melted permafrost causing havoc geographically and climactically with Central Asia. Rome is now hoping that their new clone armies, called New Legions, will finally give them that extra edge to break into and eliminate the 600-year old enemy that is the Celestial Empire.
