Fooling around or not, interesting shadow works, and even a composition after the Rule of Thirds! Nicely done. The grain hampers me a little, but only a really really little bit, as it even gives a certain "photographed on film" feeling.
I wouldn't call that "emotive portrait", as it isn't a portrait really, but...
