Now some books will tell you different things about each color. I, myself, follow something slightly different unless it comes to a more specific want.
Generally, here's my rule of thumb for the colors:
Red- passion, will
Pink- gentle love, affection
blue- healing, emotions
green- grounding, money, luck
yellow- happiness
white- purifying, all-purpose
black- protection against negativity
