Well it's that time of the year again. Yep October- the time of year where I am contractually obligated to get real SPOOKY! And what better way to than to share some of the things that have scared me both as child and adult in media such as movies, TV, video games, books, and so on! Also the following will contain specific plot elements so
~SPOILER ALERT!~
Because of How It Was Built Up: The T. Rex Hunting the Monoclonius - Prehistoric Beast/Dinosaur! (1985)
This documentary was hosted by Christopher Reeve and featured gorgeously animated stop motion segments by legendary stop motion animator Phil Tippett. While most of the segments were upbeat and wondrous there was also its share of terror such as a Deinonychus pair hunting a Struthiomimus, the Edmontosaurus family facing off against a Tyrannosaurus, and the extinction of the dinosaurs. But the scariest moment is when a Monoclonius (now considered to be the same as Centrosaurus) wondered off too far from the herd and was stalked and hunted by a T. Rex. With the change of atmosphere, music, various transitions, and camera angles the buildup for the Rex attack was very effective and is all the reason to never stray from the herd!
Because It Jumped Out At Me: Monster Ock's Reveal - Spider-Man game (2000)
Sometimes something scary happening in non-horror media can be much more frightening than something in actual horror media. See in horror media we are kind of expecting something scary happen, but when something scary in non-horror media happens it catches us off guard. Such is the case for Monster Ock's reveal in the 2000 Spider-Man video game. After defeating Carnage the Red Symbiote leaves Cletus Kasady; all seems well until out of nowhere a robotic tentacle pops out and then another grabbing and tossing Spidey across the room leading to the reveal of Monster Ock- the result of the Red Symbiote merging with Doctor Octopus.
Because It Was Insane: Dallas' Death in the Air Ducts - Alien (1979)
When the crew of the Nostromo have an unknown creature wreaking havoc on their ship they do everything in power to get rid of the unwelcome guest. The crew figures out that the creature is in the air ducts, to which Captain Dallas enters the air ducts armed with a flashlight and flamethrower intending to force the alien into an airlock with Ripley, Lambert, and Parker on standby. When they detect the alien heading towards Dallas, Lambert tells him to get out only for him to head the wrong way but by then it's too late. Everything just happened so fast and before you knew Dallas was gone!
Because It Was Grotesque: Sloth - Se7en (1995)
When detectives William Somerset and David Mills follow a series of murders they soon realize that each victim is based on the seven deadly sins and while each murder victim deserves credit for being disturbing in their own right the one that everyone remembers the most is Theodore "Victor" Allen- the third victim representing Sloth. When the two detectives and a SWAT-team enter Victor's home they find a one handed man covered in scars and almost rotted to the bone tied to a bed. Upon further inspection it is revealed that Victor has been trapped like this for an entire year. Even more disturbing: HE IS STILL ALIVE!
Also here's a little fun fact about this scene: the actors playing the SWAT-team were not told that the Sloth victim was still alive- them freaking was for real!
Because It Was Graphic: Dragonets Feeding on Princess Elspeth - Dragonslayer (1981)
When the locals of Urland have had enough of sacrificing virgin girls selected by lottery twice a year to prevent a dragon know as Vermithrax Pejorative from terrorizing them they hire Ulrich of Cragganmore, the last sorcerer for help. However there was a change of plans and his apprentice Galen was left to deal with the 400-year-old dragon. After Galen’s failed attempt to kill the beast, Princess Elspeth decides to sacrifice herself to the dragon. Galen tried to stop her, only find Vermithrax's offspring feasting on her corpse. As if the sight itself wasn't disturbing this movie was rated PG and one of the two studios behind this movie was Disney! In other words this movie shares the same rating and was made by the same studio as Frozen!
Because Of Subtext: Raphael's Nightmare - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Darkness Within (S3 E14 2005)
With references to Lovecraft and Dante's Inferno you can bet you're in for scary ride and boy did this episode deliver! When the turtles look for Angel's missing brother, Ryan they follow the only lead they have; the building where Ryan found an anicent gold coin. They soon learn the building holds a deep dark secret; an evil creature resides under the building luring humans with the promise of wealth and power and feeding off their fears! When the creature captures the turtles we get a glimsp of their darkest fears. Raphael's nightmare in particular stood out to me the most. See Raphael's greatest fear is giving into his anger and becoming his very enemy, in his nightmare he runs into The Shredder and after a fight Raph manages to knock Shredder's helment off but it's not Oroku Saki under there- it's him!
Because Of The Uncanny Valley: King Ramses - Courage The Cowardly Dog: King Ramses' Curse (S1 E7 A 2000)
After Eustace Bagge gets hold of an ancient slab he intends to make a forutne off of it. But as it turns out the slab is cursed and the owner, King Ramses wants it back and threatens Eustace to "return the slab" or he would be visted by three plagues. This episode is considered by many one of the all time scariest episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog and it's all thanks to the man in gauze himself! See unlike most the of characters in the show who are handrawn animated King Ramses is animated by CGI. Making every gesture and movement Ramses makes come off as creepy as he seems unnatural in this universe.
Because They Nearly Faced Death: The T. Rex Attack on the Main Road - Jurassic Park (1990/93)
Expect one more T. Rex attack here later on. When Roberta "Rexy" the T. Rex found out the fence to her enclosure was longer electrified she broke out and then proceeded to wreck the tour jeep Tim and Lex were in. Ian Malcom got bruttally injured trying to distract Roberta and after Alan Grant managed to get Lex out of the jeep Roberta came back and pushed the tour jeep in her enclosure with Tim still trapped inside with Grant and Lex narrowly avoiding getting crushed by the car as it fell into a tree. And if you thought this scene was scary on screen it was much more intense in the book. See in the book the T. Rex litterally picked the car up with her jaws and tossed it aside as if it was nothing! Malcolm's injuries were much more serious, Tim blacks out after hitting his head, and Rexy litterally kicks Grant across the road.
This scene was made all the more chilling with the descripton of a screaming girl being faintly heard in the rain, the sound of the T. Rex's claws screeching against the metal of the car, and blood dripping from it's jaws mixing in with the rain.
Because He Was All Alone: The Tailypo Confronting the Old Man - Tailypo (Original Story Date Unknown)
After an old hermit living somewhere out in the woods shoots or chops off (depending on the version of the story) the tail off a strange creature he decides to... eat it. Granted he hardly had any food and this was during winter when food was scarce so desperate times call for desperate measures. Anyway after eating the tail the man went to bed but was awoken by the sound of something trying to get in his cabin and calling "Tailypo. Tailypo. I want my Tailypo." The man sends his three hunting dogs to get rid the of the unwelcome guest only for the canines to disappear leaving the old man alone cowering under bed sheets, with his only wish for dawn to come. The creature then appears at the foot of the hermit's bed and it demands the man returns its "Tailypo". To which the old man tells the creature that he doesn't have it's "Tailypo". To which the creature responded that he did have it and then attacked!
Because He Was Malicious: The Wendigo Killing Everyone - Lost Tapes: Wendigo: American Cannibal (S3 E7 2010)
When four college students April Desoto, Vince Gabriel, Matthew Gaahl, and Lane Corey go missing in the Appalachian Mountains a search party consisting of tracker Porter Voss, paramedic Trent Dorsey, and leader Shelby Nash go searching for them. Unfortunately none of them made it out alive. It's revealed that Matthew had cannibalized Vince and April and turned into a Wendigo. He then proceeded to kill the rest of the cast off one by one!
Because It Hit On One Of My Phobias: Lucy's Blood Transfusion - Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
While Francis Ford Coopla's take on the ionic vampire has many scares the scene that always turned me off the most was when Dr. Van Helsing gave Lucy a blood transfusion after Dracula infected her. See I have Trypanophobia- the fear of needles. And while I have been getting better when I have to get shots, this scene always makes me squirm and feel nauseous. Maybe it's the size of the needle used, Lucy's moaning, or that despite Van Helsing's best intentions and efforts he is unable to help.
Because Of The Unknown: Frigate Orpheon - Metroid Prime (2002)
While Nintendo games aren't considered horror I tell you when they go dark and scary- THEY DO IT RIGHT! Such is the case for the first level in the first Metroid Prime game. After receiving a distress call bounty hunter Samus investigates the Space Pirate Frigate Orpheon. With eerie music, unsettling atmosphere, dead creatures, damgaged rooms, and even a door with something banging on the other side of it this is quite the first level with how it created the feeling of dread and a sinister hidden presanace.
Because I Walked In Their Shoes: Vince and Razzle's Crash - The Dirt (2019)
Now you might all be wondering how could something from the biopic of Glam Metal band Mötley Crüe be scary? Well you see as someone who recently walked away from a car crash seeing the depiction of Vince Neil and Hanoi Rocks drummer Razzle's tragic car crash unfold on screen really freaked me out. While my car crash was nowhere as serious and I walked away entirely unscathed this was a disturbing reminder of how much worse my crash could have been.
Because It Tampered With My Senses: Batman's Fear Induced Hallucinations - Dreams in Darkness (S1 E31 1992)
When Batman gets incarcerated after being exposed to The Scarecrow's fear-inducing gas he must break the law and escape from Arkham Asylum before The Scarecrow's plan to poison Gotham's water supply with the same fear-inducing gas comes to fruition. Even though we know the Caped Crusader's nightmarish hallucinations aren't real we can't help but still be terrified from what scares the Dark Knight.
Because It Showed Horrors Of Humanity: Metallica's Here Comes Revenge Music Video (2016)
This music video with it's creepy animation and use of anthropomorphic animals captured the dark side of humanity. The music video tells a disturbing story of hatred implying murder, racism, sexism, lust, and going insane without uttering a single word of dialogue or showing any violence. And this music video came out the same year as Zootopia.
Because It Showed Horrors Of Nature: The Utahraptor Attacks - Primitive War (2017)
If you thought the raptor in Jurassic Park were scary wait you get a load of the ones in the book Primitive War. To get an idea just listen to this audio book sample of the first attack: www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCTgfm…
Because It Showed Horrors Of Tech: The Terminator's Self Repairing - The Terminator (1984)
Many moments from the first Terminator could have made this spot however the scene that makes the cut is when we got see what was underneath his human disguise for the first time. After a failed attempt to kill Sarah Connor the Terminator goes back to his hideout to fix himself up. He makes an incision on his right arm to reveal cybernitic muscles responding to his hand. After attending his arm he then takes a scalpel stabs it in his damaged eye and removes it revealing that iconic creepy red eye.
Because I Felt Insignificant: Regina's First Encounter With The T. Rex - Dino Crisis (1999)
Developed by CapCom, Dino Crisis is basically Resident Evil but with dinosaurs instead of zombies and it worked very well. In fact I'd go as far as to say Dino Crisis was scarier than Resident Evil. See in Resident Evil when facing off against zombies there was at least the reassurance that you could take them down with a few shots and outrun them. Whereas in Dino Crisis when facing off against dinosaurs they could pursue you at a much faster pace and absorb much more damage to the point you would waste all your ammo. Basically you were pretty much almost powerless against these prehistoric beasts. Except for the Tyrannosaurus that follows Regina throughout the game, which is impervious to all your weapons- even the grenade launcher! This is highlighted best during the first T. Rex encounter. After the T. Rex's head bursts through the window of a room Regina is trapped with the T. Rex snapping it's jaws blocking her exit and her only defense just mildly annoying it. Eventually the T. Rex loses interest and as it leaves we're given the Rex's point of view; showing how small and powerless Regina is here.
Because Of The Atmosphere: The Blood-Bending Reveal - Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Puppet Master (S3 E8 2007)
When Aang and company visit a village they hear of many mysterious disappearances occurring on nights with a full moon. They soon discover that an innkeeper named Hama who is actually a waterbender from the Southern Water Tribe has been kidnapping civilians with the dark ability of bloodbending to enact her revenge for being taken away from home and imprisoned. As if the whole idea of a waterbender being able to take control of someone from the water in their blood wasn't disturbing enough there is some kinda squirting noise when Hama's fingers tighten up! And of course the atmosphere for this scene was spot on! You could feel the chills to the point where your blood would turn to ice!
On a side note can we get the people behind this episode to make an orginal animated horror series? No I'm serious! I bet they can make something on the same terror level as Extreme Ghostbusters, Todd McFarlane's Spawn, or something even more terrifying!
Because Of the Sound Design: ReDeads - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2002)
The Wind Waker was the first Zelda game that introduced me to the series so as you can imagine I was pretty freaked out when I had to fight ReDeads for the first time. Hearing their paralyzing shriek was disturbing. Seriously Wind Waker ReDeads freaked me out so much that I would get my older brother to kill them for me! While ReDeads have appeared in other Zelda games, I still think Wind Waker ReDeads are the scariest based on their shriek alone!
Because I Cared For Those In Peril: Luke vs. The Rancor - Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
When Luke Skywalker confronted Jabba the Hutt to free his friends, things don't go as planned and Jabba drops him through a trapdoor to be fed to his pet Rancor, Pateesa. This scene freaked me out as a kid when I saw it for the first time. The dark cavern littered with bones of the beast's past meals and the design of the Rancor itself was all the more reason to be concerned for Luke.
Because This Could Happen to Me: Getting Trapped In the Wild with an Animal Out to Get Me - Black Water (2007)
What makes this crocodile horror film so scary is that the protagonists for this film are just your average every day people forced to fight for survival against a wild animal determined to kill them. And even though I live far away from crocodiles the fact that at least 1,000+ people are killed by crocs each year makes watching this film real scary.
It Makes Me Recall Trauma: The Headless Horseman Chase - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (1949)
This is without a doubt by far my most terrifying childhood moment! First there was the buildup with the eerie noises, creepy imagery, the music, the atmosphere, and the ominous feeling that something was coming for Ichabod Crane when he had to ride home alone with his only company being his horse. And just when it seemed that there was nothing to worry about and everything was all right the most sinister evil laugh breaks that sense of relief. When Ichabod and his horse turn to look they see atop an all black horse with glowing red eyes a rider without a head clad in black save for a blood red cape armed with a sword and a flaming pumpkin- the Headless Horseman AND HE IS FOR REAL THIS TIME! The Headless Horseman gives chase swinging his sword with that evil laugh still ever present. When Ichabod finally managed to get across the bridge it seemed like he was out of danger- but it turned out he wasn't!
BECAUSE AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!: Mister Babadook's Night Time Visit - The Babadook (2014)
The buildup, the atmosphere, the sound design, and the safety of your own home being gone- yep! The Babadook's night visit is the scariest thing I have seen! NOW I'M OUTTA HERE!!!
