Description
The jade eyes for which he had been named dulled. His pale skin turned a bluish colour as he dropped his arm and no longer reached for me. I sat, paralyzed, as the monster that had just crashed through the window and murdered my best friend before my eyes turned towards me. I shook, my breath came in gasps. "J-Justin... Wh-what?" Justin cocked his head and stared at me with pale silver eyes that did not belong to him. Justin, my second closest friend, my brother, advanced towards me. He stepped on Jayyd's chest and I heard the sickening crunch of his rib cage. In that moment, I knew Jayyd Falloway was truly dead; and that I was next. I let out a piercing scream; one that alerted dogs down the street. Justin grabbed my arm and I struggled against the inhuman grip. My throat felt ready to shatter as I continued to scream for the help I so desperatly needed. I heard Jayyd's parents race up the steps, the door slammed open and his father stood there with a shotgun aimed in the room. He saw Justin, me, then his son. He cried out and fired the gun at Justin. The blast sent Justin flying away from me.I leaped off the bed and into the hall, colliding with Jayyd's mother. She had yet to see the damage in the darkened room of her beloved, only son. She tried to get past me, but I pushed her away from the room. I shook my head, tears ran down my cheeks. "No. No. No. Nononononono. Don't go there. Please." My throat hurt from my screaming and my ears rang from the shot. Another one resounded from the fire arm. I turned to see Mr. Falloway's face of terror as Justin continued to advance. The shotgun was practically useless. I screamed again, "KILL HIM!"
Falloway aimed at my brother's head and shot. There was no silence after the shot; Jayyd's music continued to play. It only took one song, by one artist, to kill Jayyd and my brother. I felt sick as I listened to it. The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars would be a song that would haunt me until the end of my life. I had no idea just how short my life would be, how little time I had left. As the song ended, I had the disturbing innotation that I was being watched.
Mr. Falloway sighed and leaned on the gun. "Marie... Call 911."
"What happened?"
"Just... Go!"
She sniffed, but turned on her heels and ran down the steps to call for the ambulence.
Mr. Falloway approached me. "David, what happened?"
I attemped to speak, but my voice failed me. I began to cry. How was I to explain this? I myself didn't even know what had just happened. One moment, Jayyd and I were talking about school, and the next... The crunch of Jayyd's bones echoed through my skull. I shuddered and began to cry even more. My brother, my own flesh and blood brother, had just killed the one person I loved most. I knew that if Mr.Falloway had not shot my brother, that I, too, would have died. It didn't make me feel any better. I had told him to kill Justin, but I was still angry that he had listened. I was confused, conflicted, pissed the fuck off.
"David? How did Justin get in?"
I pointed at the billowing curtains. Glass covered Jayyd's floor where the window had been. Again, I shudderd. How had Justin been able to crash through the window when it was on the third floor? The way it had broken, it was as if he came in from above and at an angle. Impossible.
Flashing lights came outside and penetrated the gray of Jayyd's room. The pool of blood that surrounded Jayyd's lifeless body shimmered and glowed. I gagged. I heard people hurry up the stairs and I moved out of the way, against the hallway wall. Emergency responders rushed past me with stretchers. I heard one of them swear as he saw the horrific scene in the bedroom. "We need another stretcher!" He had just yelled out the window to the people bellow. I closed my eyes and began to slide down the wall. One of the responders took my arm and caught me. "Can you walk downstairs?"
I nodded and he lead me downstairs. When I had first looked at him, I nearly screamed. He was almost identical to my brother. Only his eyes and hair were of different colours. When we reached the living room, he told me to sit on the couch. I sat down and my head spun.
He returned within a few moments later with medical instruments. "Are you hurt?"
I started to shake my head when I remembered the grip that Justin had used on my arm. "My elbow... Just- it..." I shakily lifted my left arm towards him. He gently grabbed it and pulled my sleeve up. I gulped and hoped he didn't ask about the cuts on my wrist. He pulled out a flash light that washed out my skin and made it look as blue as Jayyd's now did. Out of the corner of my eyes, I saw them pulling a stretcher out the door. The body underneath it had stained the sheet red, I knew it was Jayyd's body by the size. I gulped.
"Just looks like some bruising, but you might want to get it x-rayed. Does it hurt to bend?"
It took me a moment to realize that he was talking to me and about my elbow. I tried to bend it, it hurt like a mother fucker. I hissed.
"Yeah, get it x-rayed. Look here, I wanna check out your eyes." He shone a different flash light into my eyes and when he was done, I felt blinded. He took my blood pressure and frowned. "Not that great, but after some sleep you should be fine."
Mr. Falloway sat next to me, looking ragged. I heard Mrs. Falloway crying outside. A second stretcher went past and I knew that they were taking Justin away. "How is he supposed to sleep after what just happened?"
The paramedic gave Mr. Falloway a sad smile. "You'de be surprised how tired some people get after tragic events."
Mr. Falloway scowled and forced himself up out of the couch, he went outside.
The paramedic turned back to me, "Here," he handed me a card. "My mother's a psychologist. Show her this and say that Micheal gave it to you. She'll give you five free sessions if you need them." I frowned and Micheal-whose-mother-is-a-shrink sighed, "Before you go and doubt it, just check it out. What'll it cost you? Sometimes talking helps."
