Description
Howdy y'all! An essential part of a ranger's training is orienteering--learning how to navigate through the wilderness with only natural cues (position of the sun and stars, which side moss grows on, notable landmarks, etc.) to guide you. Born with an innate sense of natural direction, Diana mastered this skill early on, but for most apprentices it takes lots of practice. Indeed, one of the reasons Diana is assigned an apprentice is the knowledge that she can find her way back if her charge manages to get them lost!
Such won't be necessary in this case, however. Here, Diana's apprentice, young Sandra Chastain, excitedly points ahead as she spots the landmark that is her goal, after navigating through a densely wooded area with plenty of twists and turns along the way. Diana smiles, pleased that her student has aced her test and is ready to move on to the next challenge of her training....
This fabulous sketch is a commission done for me by who never ceases to amaze me with her pencil work. Note the fallen log in the foreground, complete with mushrooms growing out of it! If you look closely, you'll see that the log is actually acting as a bridge over a steep drop, providing yet another obstacle for our apprentice to overcome. But then, Sandra's a squirrel, right? She should have *no problem* stepping over that log bridge!
Diana and Sandra are © me, the art is by thetiedtigress . Be sure to commission her if you get the opportunity!
