I use complementary colors in layers that are set to Multiply, and then some gradients in the lighter (the helmet) and darker (legs) areas. Glad you like it!
I'm thinking of doing a series of images like this for each Metroid game. Like a black and white one for Metroid II, one in the Zero Suit for Zero Mission, etc.
