Description

We emerge  from the heated in car into the brisk February air. The sand blows up against my jacket as we approach the water's edge. The water is frozen for a mile out, and snows mounds dot the ice in a wave formation.

"Come on, " I urge him, as I step onto the ice, tugging at his coat sleeve.

He hesitantly follows, whispering, "Won't we get in trouble? Isn't this dangerous?"

"Come on!" I laugh again at the irony of his questions.

He shifts his gaze to the lone man on the beach flying a kite as if he seeks this stranger's approval. We take careful and deliberate steps as we move further out into the open until we reach the edge where broken ice drifts in waves, floating out into the unknown. We stand there in silence, our fingers intertwine, looking out into the vast open space with no end insight. Perfection.

Four.
Five.

I'm like the broken ice, floating out into the unknown.
