Samuel Sterns was a colleague of Bruce Banner and Betty Ross and worked with them on the Super soldier serum. Sterns was always jealous of his more successful colleague Banner, and when he turned into the Hulk, he became obsessed with the idea of repeating his success and creating his own version of the serum. As soon as he got the Hulk's blood, Sterns synthesized serum samples from it, which he tested on various people, trying to create the perfect version. Eventually, he tests one of the versions of the serum on himself, which grotesquely enlarges his brain and gives him even higher intelligence.
