On the planet Thanagar, some decades ago, the discovery of a metal called Nth lead to a technological revolution. Not only did the two warring nations of Thal and Hol broker an ever-lasting peace, these avian humanoids, the Thanagarians, were blessed with advanced technology and commerce with the intergalactic community, even leading some Thanagarians to joining the Spectrum Lantern Alliance, a military-police organization of various alien races from across the thousands of sectors of space. But there are those who do not agree with the nations of Thal and Hol building their world into a technologically advanced society. They were proponents of returning to the old ways, before the discovery of Nth, and continuing down this path, according to them, will bring forth the wrath of the Seven Deities of Thanagar. One of these proponents was a keeper of the Museum of Thanagarian History in the nation of Hol. His name is N’Ton L’Mont. Some time ago, he had discovered the vestments of an ancient cult that worshipped Kagliostro, one of the Seven Devils of Thanagar. Whether it was by accident or deliberate design, N’Ton discovered the black magic behind the vestments… Meanwhile, after two decades of being together (not a long measure by Thanagarian standards), Vetalla Dae, the curator of the museum, and her beloved Shayera Thal, princess of the nation of Thal, announced their marriage plans to their family and friends. They were elated, and Shayera’s father, the king of Thal, began planning a royal wedding. One night, however, at the museum, Shayera and Vetalla heard a disturbance in one of the wings of the building. They soon discovered that N’Ton had not only stolen the cultist vestments he had discovered, but he was wearing them. The two Thanagarian women charged N’Ton, but he fired a blast of energy (that resembled an orb of distorted space and light) that managed to hit Vetalla. Shayera flew to her unconscious fiancé’s side as N’Ton flew away and escaped the security’s convergence on the scene. At the hospital, Shayera stayed at the unconscious Vetalla’s side in her room until the doctor showed up to tell the princess that Vetalla suffered nothing too severe from that attack. However, when Vetalla awoke with a shock, she was screaming that she didn’t know who she was or where she was! She didn’t recognize Shayera, and she had to be sedated. When she was asleep again, Shayera growled at the doctor that she clearly had a head injury that led to amnesia, but the doctor said that her charts show that she didn’t have any cranial trauma. Figuring that the magic blast did this, Shayera flew off to find N’Ton, assuming he could reverse whatever he did. Changing into the costume of Hawkwoman (a hero who worked alongside the Earth-based heroes called The Justice League) and brandishing her Nth metal mace, Shayera flew across the capital city of Hol to find N’Ton. However, she discovered a phenomena that was just as disturbing as what happened to Vetalla. More spheres of distortion were emerging across the technologically-advanced city. Buildings were vanishing and transforming into ancient ruins, vegetation and fauna were violently reemerging from the past, Thanagarian people were disappearing or appearing from out of nowhere. And Hawkwoman did what she could to get the people away from the spheres before seeing N’Ton standing atop of an ancient spire, launching these spheres from his hands. Hawkwoman flew to him, demanding to undo all this madness, but he refused. Calling himself Fadeaway, N’Ton proclaimed that this world must fade into obscurity and that the ancient ways of Thanagar must return. This will be the only way to appease the Seven Deities and stay their wrath. Hawkwoman and Fadeaway did battle, with the former swatting away the spheres of distortion Fadeaway fires at her with her mace. Thanagarian security ships arrived to assist Hawkwoman in fighting the villain, but his magic attacks were too powerful for them, and they were grounded. In the end, Hawkwoman managed to damage the robe Fadeaway wore, the source of his magic, and then he began fading away himself! He tried to launch an even bigger sphere of his fade magics, but Hawkwoman threw her mace into it, the special properties of the Nth metal causing it to disperse without harm. With his strength spent, N’Ton faded away himself. Where he truly went is beyond us to know… With Fadeaway and the cult vestment gone, the magics were undone slowly. As for Vetalla, she awoke in her hospital bed soon enough, and asked to see Shayera by name. All her memories hadn’t been returned immediately, and will return slowly, but her memory of love for Shayera was the first to return to her.
