Description
This is something that’s been rattling around my head for some time now, ever since Disney announced they were working on a prequel to TLK about Mufasa. In the short preview for the movie, it’s revealed that Mufasa was not born in the Pride Lands, and was swept away to the Pride Lands by a flood that killed his parents and was then later adopted by the royal family. While I don’t like the idea as canon, I do like it as an AU. So this is my idea of an AU where Mufasa is adopted. In this AU, Ahadi is Mohatu’s child, not Uru. Ahadi is born to the Ndona Pride during the drought that struck the Pride Lands during Mohatu’s reign, and because of this he is born small and sickly due to the malnutrition his mother went through during the drought. Because of this, Ahadi is coddled by his parents and the pride, and grows up to be quite naïve of the world around him. Ahadi grew up to be optimistic, kind, and just, but often far to trusting and stubborn for his own good, insisting on seeing the good in everyone even if there appears to be none. This has gotten him into trouble more than once.
Uru, on the other hand, is Ahadi’s opposite in almost every way. She was born in what is now the Out Lands shortly after the end of the drought, born to the King of the warmongering Mbala Pride and his Queen. Uru is raised to be both a queen and a warrior, raised like every heir before her to continue the fight with the Pride Lands to regain their ancestral home that was stolen from them by the first King of the Pride Lands. Uru is fully aware of the harshness of the world around her. The Out Lands never fully recovered from the drought like the Pride Lands did, and as such Uru could only watch helplessly as her friends and family alike died, including her own father. This, along with her harsh warrior training, has made her cynical, cold, and pessimistic.
When Uru’s father died, her mother realized that for their pride to survive, they would need to ally themselves with their age old enemies, as the Pride Lands had fully recovered and was flourishing with life where the Out Lands were not. Swallowing her pride, Uru’s mother met with Mohatu when both Uru and Ahadi were teens, offering to join their prides together as one if Mohatu would wed his son to her daughter. He agreed, thankful to find a peaceful solution to end the generations of war between their prides. Ahadi and Uru, on the other hand, were not happy.
They got along like hyenas and lions, fighting over the littlest of things. Uru saw Ahadi as childish, naïve, and spoiled, while Ahadi saw Uru as brutish, cruel, and spiteful. But despite their dislike for one another, they got married anyways as was their duty. The two worked surprisingly well together as rulers for the most part, both balancing each other out with their opposing personalities. They even grew to (mostly) respect each other over time, even if they never did love each other. But as the King by blood, Ahadi had the final say on any decisions they made, something that Uru greatly resented. Despite her best efforts, she was often unsuccessful in making sure Ahadi made decisions with his head and not his heart, which made it so Uru would often have to clean up any messes Ahadi made with his decision making on her own. Eventually Ahadi would make a decision that would be severely detrimental to the Pride Lands, one that Uru couldn’t fix and would effect the Pride Lands for generations to come.
This decision that would permanently damage the Pride Lands was to adopt Mufasa as his own son and make him heir to the throne. Initially this decision came about because Ahadi and Uru were having fertility issues, and weren’t sure if they even could have children after many years of trying. When Ahadi found Mufasa lost and alone next to his dead parents after a flood one day, he decided (without Uru’s input) to take the child in as his own. He saw this as a neat solution to the problem of having no heir, as now they wouldn’t have to worry about the line of succession should something happen to Ahadi before he has an heir. Pride Lands law did allow adopted cubs to inherit, after all, should the reigning monarch and their spouse not have cubs of their own.
Uru, of course, was greatly displeased when Ahadi brought home Mufasa and explained to her the decision he made without including her. She felt as if Ahadi was simply giving up, though he insisted that was not the case and they could continue to try for cubs. She begrudgingly accepted Ahadi’s decision, mostly because she was aware that they did need an heir, blood related or not. But she was not happy about the decision, and neither were old members of the Mbala. The former Mbala members and even a few native Ndona refused to acknowledge Mufasa as heir to the Pride Lands throne. Uru also refused to acknowledge Mufasa as her son. To her, he was just like any other cub in the pride. She treated him well enough, but kept him at arms length.
Years later, when Mufasa was entering into adolescence, a miracle finally happened. After many years of trying and failing, Uru was finally pregnant. The Pride Lands rejoiced, as now Ahadi would have a proper heir to the throne. Not that they didn’t like Mufasa, of course, he was a good kid and all, but he wasn’t of royal blood. So imagine everyone’s surprise when, after Uru gave birth to little Takatso, Ahadi refused to name his newborn son as heir and kept Mufasa as his heir instead. Ahadi’s reasoning was that Mufasa had been training to be king for a long time now, and it wouldn’t be fair to him to suddenly no longer be next in line simply because Ahadi now had a son related by blood. To Ahadi, Mufasa was just as much his son as Takatso is, so as the first born he should become the next King regardless of his blood relation to Ahadi and the royal family.
To say Uru was furious was an understatement. How dare Ahadi deny her son his birthright? HOW DARE HE!? The two had their worst fight yet, nearly coming to blows and screaming their heads off at one another. But Ahadi refused to change his decision no matter what; Mufasa would remain his heir, whether Uru liked it or not. Any respect Uru had for Ahadi evaporated right then and there, and for the rest of their lives they refused to speak to each other about anything that didn’t have to do with their son or the state of the Pride Lands.
Uru raised Takatso to hate his father and adopted brother, telling him how the rogue-born Mufasa stole his birthright from him, and that he was the rightful heir. She taught her son to fight for his right to the throne and take it back by any means necessary, which ended up with young Takatso challenging Mufasa one day for the throne. Unfortunately Takatso was born small and weak like his father before him and wasn't fully grown when he challenged Mufasa, thus he was subsequently beaten by Mufasa and given his signature scar. But Uru encouraged Takatso, now calling himself Scar, not to give up. If he can’t take back his throne with brute strength, then he’ll just have to use sharp mind instead. She also prepared the former Mbala Pride members and the few Ndona Pride members who were on her son's side for a civil war, should it come down to it, all under Ahadi’s nose. Ahadi knew many members of the pride were not happy with him, especially the former Mbala Pride, so he tried to fix things by betrothing Mufasa to Sarabi, a distant cousin of Uru’s. Sarabi's family was well respected in the pride and loyal to the Pride Lands throne, so he hoped that by marrying the two together the former Mbala Pride members would be happy. Unfortunately it didn’t make things much better, and Sarabi and her family were seen as traitors by the former Mbala Pride members. The stress of trying to keep his pride happy and ruling a kingdom without Uru running interferance for him now caused Ahadi to die an early death from a heart attack. Mufasa then took the throne with Sarabi by his side.
Uru did her best to prepare her son to take his rightful place. She had him marry another distant cousin of theirs, a strong lioness named Zirali (better known as Zira) who was blindly loyal to both Uru and Scar. When Scar came to her with his plan to get rid of Mufasa and his son, Uru approved, though she wasn’t happy that he had allied himself with the hyena clan from the Elephant Graveyard, as she saw them as untrustworthy. Uru and Zira stood by Scar’s side as he rose up to become King after he murdered Mufasa and chased away Simba, even after he continued to make bad decisions as King to the detriment of the Pride Lands. The only big decision of his she disapproved of was his disowning of Nukato as his heir and naming Kovu, son of a low ranking pridesister and a rogue, as heir instead, seeing it as him making the same mistake as Ahadi. But at least Scar was willing to betroth Kovu to his daughter Vitani, meaning his blood will still be on the throne. And when Scar was eventually overthrown by Simba and killed by the hyenas, Uru followed Zira and other former Mbala Pride members and their cubs back to the Out Lands, refusing to acknowledge Simba as King.
Uru eventually died in the Out Lands from a combination of malnutrition and old age, dying not long after Kovu meets Kiara. The Outlanders, especially Nuka and Vitani, whom she was very close to, grieved for her loss.
Eventually Ahadi’s wrongs would right themselves. Though Kovu would end up marrying Kiara instead of Vitani, his son and Vitani’s daughter would end up getting together, finally putting Mohatu’s bloodline back on the throne where it belongs and permanently rejoining the Ndona and Mbala prides together as one.
