Description a tree growing on a river bank. based on a photo i took in 1997.

charcoal, oil pastel, colored pencil on newsprint.

i am very fond of this piece. i worked on it for a total of 8 hours. this is a 2mp photo of the piece which is actually 14'x22' ... a higher quality version may replace this one in the future.

dedicated to brad because he's had a rough week.

It is very beautiful! I like the way you use line, it is so lively. Well.. The subject is kinda boring (if you think it like a photo) but you made it look very intresting. And the leaves aren't too dark, most artists make mistake there and works them too much, making them look "clogged".
The white background works great, not too even.

To sum it up, this work is bloody marvelous!

on this one, mate.

Beautiful, wonderful use of colour in the leaves. I also very much like the texture of the white. A favourite from me.

I definitely like this piece. The mixed media works extremely well here, as it isn't too apparent, yet apparent enough to give it a certain edge. The subtle hint of colour in the leaves gives it a nice touch.

Personally I would have liked to see a bit more detailing of the tree bark to bring out some of the gnarly features of the roots to add some interest in the bottom part of the picture, but it still works as it is. =]

very very nice work, I like it a lot
I like the style of it a lot, and the medium you chose to do it in... it has a creepy look to it, which I think, is because of the style and medium.
and, even though it has leaves, I like the bareness of it, it has an evil look to it somehow... I like the leaves a lot though... they look like they're all dead and ready to fly off on a windy day.
good slight highlights in the roots-n-stuff..
and I like how you used the white a lot too...
good work on this

i like it a lot. I am not familiar with charchol or this type of medium. As such there is little advice i can offer. I guess the only thing i can offer is that you described it as living on a river bank but where is the river?

Nice value range, good contrast and the composition is interesting. At first I thought it was too weighted to the left. Then as I looked at it further the white (not neccessary the negative value considering the actual newsprint would be the negative value) actually opposingly mirrors the subject returning an aesthetic balance back on the whole piece.

If you drew a line to cut the piece from upper right to bottom left, the negative-positive relationship is very even.

Good job.

I really like how you did this piece, and how you used so few colors to such a great effect.
The background gives a great contrast to the tree
I like the way that you did not paint the whole paper in the background color it makes it look even better I think
The roots are really awsome and the leaves as well
If I could find something to complain about I guess it would be that you dont paint often enough
well done

ok...i'm no artist so i can't really say if it's technically well done i can just say if i like what i see or not.

in this case...me likes. the time u invested was really well spend...especially the leaves are nice. must have taken u some time to do them. the background seems a lil empty tho. what i like the most are the colors...or better to say the light and strong shades

overall...top notch...i could never ever do such a thing

nice. I like the style and the colours. The sky is all white though. usually theres a bit of blue..but sometimes there isn't. I like it the way it is.

although charcoal is like my mortal enemy when it comes to some of my earlier art pieces...you used it real well here ryan, this looks pretty damn nice...

and even tho ive got alot of nerve to say this, i think its too black...considering all my stuff is so dark its rediculous...

great job man
