Chapter 4Meanwhile, back in the village, Lady Bloodfur had just woken up. Recollecting the previous day and how her daughter had dashed off after the funeral, Bloodfur walked to Mora’s room and opened the door. Mora was not in her bed. At first Bloodfur dismissed it from in her mind. Mora had always been an early riser. Bloodfur checked the entire house. Mora wasn’t anywhere. That was when she started to get worried. She heard Anak at the door calling,
“Lady Bloodfur! Lady Bloodfur! Zircal is gone! And there is food missing from the cooking hut!” Lady Bloodfur quickly put together the pieces. Mora and Zircal gone, food missing, They must have left the village! She dashed to the door and wrenched it open.
“Anak, Mora is gone too. I think she and Zircal have gone off on a journey.”
“Why would they have done that?!”
“Why else? Mora must have gone to avenge Firefur. And Zircal must gone with her to protect her.” Anak looked rather stunned. Suddenly, Bloodfur remembered something. There had been a piece of parchment on Mora’s pillow. She quickly dashed back to Mora’s room and got it. Sure enough, there was some writing on it. It was a short, cryptic message, In poem form.
‘You’ll find me gone,
sometime at dawn,
on a journey heroic and long,
but my fathers spirit is what will keep me strong.
To the wolf’s castle is where I go.
I’ll be safe, that much you can know.’
Bloodfur and Anak studied the poem over and over. Finally Anak said,
“To the wolfs castle? She really did go then. We have to go after them. They could be killed!”
“No.”
“What?”
“Mora left because she felt she had to get revenge on the wolf king. She won’t rest until Firefur’s spirit is at peace. That will be when Ekar is killed.” Anak looked at Lady Bloodfur. The two vixens had been friends ever since Mora’s birth. Anak believed what Bloodfur said but was still worried about Zircal.
“If you believe that’s the reason they left, than I believe it.” Bloodfur smiled at Anak.
“The most we can do is hope they come home safe and sound, and light a lantern to guide them home.” Anak nodded, but Bloodfur could see that she was worried for her son.
“Come on. We’ll go to the cooking hut and cook some food to replace what those two scamps took.” Anak nodded and started off towards the cooking hut. Lady Bloodfur took one last look at her daughters note lying on the table and muttered to a painting of Firefur on the wall behind her,
“Firefur, please protect Mora on her journey. Keep her safe. Don’t let any harm come to her. She’s all I’ve got left now.” and then she turned and accompanied Anak to the cooking hut.
