Description
On the early morning of May 6th, 1943 while accompanied by two light cruisers, the crew of the vessel spotted a Mitsubishi G3M, followed shortly after by a few more. The first one was shot down, but the second one successfully torpedoed the stern of one of the light cruisers. A third had set fire to the bow of the battlecruiser. After about 11 minutes, the fire made its way to the magazine causing a large explosion which sunk the battlecruiser and killed most of the crew.
