I was kicking around an idea where Frontier MIGHT have been visited by some humans, way back in the day.

The Altus enjoyed these beings' presence among them for a long time, so much so that they began to look just like these humans.

The fact that these beings do not live among them now shows the Altus just how much they've lost over time. It isn't known what happened to their friends, but its common belief that they were devoured by the Onyx a long long time ago. This is further supported by how there are no Altus to date who still live from the time that the humans still lived on Frontier, therefore no one can debunk the common belief.

This 'human' form that modern Altus have barely resembles what actual humans are like.

Generally, only Altus who have matured assume this form, because they are the only ones with enough energy to do so regularly.

It's a smaller form that allows for more nimble maneuvers and the greater dexterity it allows makes it so that the Altus can manufacture the things they need for daily life. Things like their buildings, weapons, even mine for the elemental gems that're so important in their fight against the Onyx.

Features that carry over to this form include the number of digits they have on their hands and feet, their horns (Though they are smaller in this form), as well as their tails. Things like their gems mysteriously disappear-- though no one knows why.

Their wings are always out in this form, because this form is far smaller than the original, and cannot be stored in shoulder sheathes like normal. Wings in this stage are soft and malleable, and cannot sustain flight. They can bend in every which way.

I'm doing this and a ton of other stuff to add more info to the Altus as a species. I actually even have a sheet devoted to the Onyx that'll be coming out soon. So sit tight!
