Description
Static thunder washed over us, the sound, deafening, shook the ground around us. We stood, huddle together for warmth, our pale hands clutching at the semi-automatics in our pale cold hands. Our cold faces seemed to have been swept by death truthfully they may have been more than once. Most of these men and women had never taken another creature's life before, but why would we, we were scientists. We always had left the killing to the mindless government lackies, but now, in this new world of kill or be killed, we were on our own.A deep ground shattering bellow came over the hill over to the left side of us. A couple people dropped there gun, Idiot's I thought, Why would you drop the gun! The beast, a monstrosity the size of a tank, and twice as strong came storming over the hill.
"Don't just stand there! Shoot it!" I screamed angrily, if we died now it would be these ignorant fools fault.
I start firing my gun roaring, bullets piercing into its chest like a chain saw through pigs flesh. Soon after I started the assault five others started, three of us had to switch the clips a couple of time. I pushed my new clip in with a reassuring click. Just as quickly as the beast charged it fell with a hearty crash, causing the ground beneath our feet to shudder, a couple of people fell over. We pick one of the idiots that dropped their gun to check and see if it was dead. It was, its face was ground meat, and we had him smash what ever brains were left. We took know chances in this new place.
Maybe I should explain. My name was Leo Miniks, in this place we don't really need names, we don't make friends for fear of losing them. I, like the others, am a scientist. This city we're hiding in is just one of the many cities ravaged by these biogenetic monsters. This, this horrible, horrible place, is our fault.
The government wanted a bigger and better weapon. A biological weapon. We had no idea how to make one though, none of us had this very careful science mastered yet. We tried to turn them down, tried to say no, but they started to threaten our already dwindling funding. At first we cared, but we realized how many lives were really on the line and tried to tell them no again. That's when they sent the lackies to "teach us a lesson." They killed a scientist, one of my friends, and said this could be you. We of course ended up obeying.
We were forced to work, and after three rigorous years we had an idea of what to do, a very basic theory. However when you tell the big guys up stairs that you have an idea, they think that we know everything, and we know the consequences of our actions. We, on the other hand, had no clue as to what this would do, we needed at least ten to twenty more years of just research and development. They didn't care, and put us to work as quick as possible. After months of labor and development all we had to show for our efforts were twenty-three failed experiments. Each one of the mutants had to be killed, we lost control of them and couldn't keep them from attacking one another or us.
I should elaborate, these creatures, these monsters that were supposed to be biogenetic menaces, were once humans, like you or me. The government took men on death row and "volunteered" them. People, bad people, but people that still had lives and family before all this crap. Now their bodies were mutilated beyond recognition and just thrown into a furnace to be disposed of.
After a year or so of more failure we soon had a creature that could be controlled that had a stable DNA line. It didn't explode under too much physical exertion, and didn't lose its "sanity." We told our "bosses" and for a split second we actually thought that we could go home. No, they wanted more. They told us to continue to make more, and we were forced to perform experiments that PETA would kill us for. Soon we had fifty of these controllable fleshy tanks. We put them through rigorously gruesome tests which each one passed. However we were about to give our report when test subject 343-01 started to attack without cause. We had noticed that each day this subject became more violent, soon it got to the point it had to be exterminated. We reported this major bug in their design and we were told to proceed as though nothing happened.
A week after the forty-nine monstrosities were released onto the battlefield forty-eight of them morphed into exactly the same creature as subject 343-01. The forty-ninth, although he didn't mutate, was destroyed to prevent possible future mutations. It was difficult to destroy the beasts, we had their numbers dwindling for awhile, until they figured out how to mutate others. We never saw this coming, however we never saw them morphing either.
