It was an end and a beginning. As the moon illuminates the night that Mud's 16 moon-long apprenticeship comes to an end, Mudpool finds herself stuck in a whirlwind of thought. The loss that plagued her (Sprucestorm and Whistlestride wouldn't get to hear her new name) and the knowledge that guided her found themselves clashing. Staying awake throughout her entire vigil was easy; Mud was busy pondering the future to feel tired.
It was strange. She never looked to the future as a hostage. She had to be alert, because her kittypet blood meant the rebels could kill her off at any moment. Now, she had an entire life to look forward to. It was like time suddenly started moving forward when it had been at a standstill. It was scary.

It was exciting.
